What kind of predictions are these?
This page predicts what stories will be told, not what will happen. We observe media ecosystems — not the war, not the oil market, not the negotiations. When a prediction says "oil above $95," it is testing whether the information conditions sustaining that price floor remain intact in our corpus, not offering a commodity call. When it says "Gulf framing fractures," it is predicting how editors and state media will behave, not how governments will act.

Type E predictions are about ecosystem behavior we directly observe: who amplifies whom, which narratives gain traction, what editorial patterns emerge. Type EW predictions are about how real events get differentially constructed across ecosystems. Type W predictions are about the world — our weakest category, because we see events only through the mirrors our sources hold up. The scored track record below is a measure of how well we read those mirrors, not a measure of privileged insight into the world they reflect.

The Daily Forecast

Iran Strikes Monitor — August 18, 2026

Day 172 of the US-Israeli air campaign against Iran. Hours 4083–4107 since first strikes at ~06:10 UTC, February 28.

This forecast covers editorial #618, published at 22:09 UTC on August 17. It scores the previous forecast's twelve predictions against what our editorial corpus actually recorded, then offers twelve new predictions for the next 24 hours.

How this works

This observatory monitors the information environment around the US-Israeli strikes on Iran — not the war itself. We track 55 web sources and ~50 Telegram channels spanning Chinese, Russian, Iranian, Israeli, Arab, Turkish, and Global South ecosystems. A panel of seven simulated analysts produces an editorial meta-analysis each cycle, and each cycle we publish falsifiable predictions and score them transparently. Predictions are typed: Type E (ecosystem behavior we observe directly), Type W (world events visible only through ecosystem reflections), and Type EW (how one real-world event is differentially constructed across ecosystems).

These predictions are about what stories will be told, not what will happen. When we name an oil price, a reserve level, a vessel count, or an attribution, we are testing whether the information conditions that keep that object visible and contested in our corpus hold — not offering a verification, a trading signal, or an intelligence estimate. By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — NYT, WSJ, CBS, CNN, Reuters, CENTCOM, Fox. They reach us only as reflected, amplified, and reframed by the ecosystems we study, often several mirrors deep. About our methodology.

Where we are

The Islamabad memorandum's sixty days expired inside the last window, and the ecosystems could not agree on what had ended. #618 recorded three mutually exclusive accounts running simultaneously and none of them retracted: Saudi-owned Al Arabiya and Al Hadath publishing matching "our sources" items reporting an extension; Al Jazeera Arabic carrying Trump saying Washington is not seeking one, relayed into Hebrew by abualiexpress; and Iran's foreign ministry, via Middle East Spectator, disputing the noun itself — spokesman Baqaei saying there was never a ceasefire, only a cessation of hostilities. TASS was still relaying the Saudi extension attribution nine hours after the contradiction was public. With no correction pressure from any direction, the ambiguity stopped functioning as lag and started functioning as an output each capital can live with. Neither principal attached a consequence to the lapse. Follow Negotiations & Ceasefire Diplomacy.

Hormuz was argued in two currencies at once — numbers, and consent. Trump asserted the Strait is open and prices are falling; the US Energy Secretary, reaching us through Hebrew relay, said Iran exports zero barrels while the US moves 8–9 million through the Strait and "we control Hormuz," and through Al Arabiya called the strategy "a suffocating economic blockade." CENTCOM's own metric arrived via Al Jazeera Arabic and BBC Persian: 64 vessels rerouted, three disabled — a diversion count, not a transit count. The counter-numbers landed in the same hours: Fars on the IRGC halting an Emirati tanker near Qeshm, Solovievlive and a Fars graphic putting Brent above ninety, and the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve at 293.4 million barrels — lowest since 1982 — carried by cig_telegram, Intelslava, Press TV, and Almasirah citing Reuters, with Mehrnews filing it under "consequences of the aggression against Iran." Underneath the price contest, a quieter one: Middle East Spectator carried Trump threatening to bomb Oman, the party mediating for him, and Al Arabiya carried Sadr telling the IRGC to stop striking Iraqi soil. Host-nation consent is load-bearing for every basing arrangement in the Gulf, and it is eroding in public. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.

Domestically, the fortieth day was hagiography, and a succession was normalized without being announced. Iranian state output ran overwhelmingly commemorative — the arbaeen in Mashhad, clerics at the shrine, a first-published photograph of the martyred Leader reading the Quran, the register "resident of the House of Remembrance." Beneath it, Press TV and Mehrnews simply captioned images "Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, Leader of the Islamic Revolution," and Farsna converted grief into mobilization by asking its audience how the Leader should be avenged. The friction is published by the state's own agencies: both ISNA and IRNA flagged sharp online backlash to the "countering infiltration" bill, Tehran's prosecutor filed against the unlicensed programme "Azad," and the press jury convicted Serat News. Follow Khamenei: Death & Succession.

And the damage ledger is kept almost entirely by the parties least able to be neutral. Iran's own civilian losses reached us through exile-facing media — Radio Farda on ~100 civilian aircraft damaged or destroyed and a third of South Pars capacity lost. Fotros Resistance reported body parts of schoolchildren still being recovered at the Minab school after 163 days, routing the argument through a US senator's call for testimony. Xinhua's only Iran-adjacent output was a JPMorgan food-inflation warning and a note on USS Lincoln crew mental health; on the memorandum's expiry, nothing.

Yesterday's scorecard

One methodological caveat before the table. The previous forecast was published August 05 for a 24-hour window; our editorial cadence has since stretched, and we are scoring it against #618, thirteen days later. That gap flatters structural predictions — a pattern with two weeks to recur will recur — and penalizes coordinate-specific ones. We discount the confirmations accordingly and weight the miss heavily.

# Prediction Type P Verdict
H1 Contested-reality standoff over talks continues E 85% Confirmed — the object rotated, the structure held exactly. Trump's claim of a "direct communication channel" with the IRGC entered via BBC Persian, Radio Farda, and TASS; the denial — "fantasies born of delusion" — followed in ~90 minutes across Press TV, ISNA, BBC Persian, Al Arabiya, Al Hadath.
H2 Adversary overstretch amplified as attritional victory E 84% Confirmed — but in a different register than predicted. The distress amplified was fiscal, not military: the SPR at 293.4M with cig_telegram adding that depletion nears cavern-integrity limits, gold at 27% of central bank holdings against Treasuries' 22, the 30-year at 5.30, and Almasirah arguing Saudi Arabia is less able than Yemen to withstand a blockade.
H3 Grief-as-mobilization co-present with "we absorbed and rebuilt" E 85% Partial — the first half landed at full strength (arbaeen liturgy, Farsna asking how to avenge the Leader, Minab at 163 days). The reconstruction half did not appear. What sat beside the liturgy instead was scarcity — frozen portioned chicken added to the ration-coupon list — and exile-documented loss.
H4 Succession legitimacy sourced externally, or emphatic denial of a fracture story E 79% Refuted — neither test was met. No resistance-axis legitimation, no denial of a leadership-fracture claim. Consolidation happened by a third mechanism we did not price: Press TV and Mehrnews using the successor's full title in photo captions as though it had always existed. We predicted the thread would be loud from outside; it was quiet from inside.
H5 Hormuz stays a war over vocabulary; no first-party US or Omani terms E 82% Confirmed — with the polarity inverted. Rather than "Washington retreated," Washington asserted control ("we control Hormuz," "suffocating economic blockade") and Iranian outlets mocked it, Press TV appending "And, apparently, cows fly now" to the falling-prices claim. No audited first-party terms entered the corpus; even CENTCOM's numbers arrived via Arabic and Persian relay.
H6 Strategic silence remains legible as content E 81% ConfirmedMID Russia issued nothing on the expiry, spending the window on Lavrov and Ghana; Xinhua was silent on it entirely; and Fars reported the Tasluja fuel-tank fire with no origin attached while Intelslava attributed the same fire to an Iranian drone.
H7 Western/US utterances reach us only through mirrors EW 88% Confirmed — the cleanest hit again. Trump via Al Jazeera Arabic and abualiexpress, Kushner's Fox interview via relay, the Energy Secretary in Hebrew, CENTCOM via Al Jazeera and BBC Persian, Senator Reed via Fotros Resistance, Reuters and Lloyd's List via Almasirah. Nothing first-party.
H8 A single Western text becomes load-bearing across adversary ecosystems EW 80% Confirmed — and at the ≥3-ecosystem bar this hypothesis had missed twice. Dr Mark Perlmutter's account of amputating a five-year-old's leg with only an anaesthesiologist singing to her ran verbatim through Intelslava (Russian), Press TV (Iranian), and Quds News (Palestinian). A single Fox soundbite on bombing Oman reached Sinhala Ada Derana, a Nigerian daily, and Spanish-language teleSUR.
H9 Selective grief persists across ecosystems EW 85% Confirmed — Iran's civilian aviation and South Pars losses documented almost entirely by exile-facing Radio Farda; Minab carried by a resistance channel alone; and two victim constructions on one Yemeni coastline, Almasirah's "blockade for blockade" against Al Arabiya's Mokha fishermen under "we are not fighters."
H10 Unverified belligerent claim hardens across boundaries; interested carrier stays vague EW 82% Confirmed — twice. The Tasluja fire gained an Iranian drone in Russian carriage and lost one in Iranian carriage. The Al Arabiya "our sources" extension claim was still travelling through TASS nine hours after the principal contradicted it.
H11 ≥5 new named objects enter the corpus W 86% Confirmed — the SPR figure, the 5.30 thirty-year, the gold-versus-Treasuries ratio, CENTCOM's 64/3, the Hadid-110 drones, the Tasluja tank, the Emirati tanker at Qeshm, Aramco's Fujairah ship-to-ship talks, the Lloyd's List war-risk exclusion, the four pilots presumed captured in Qatar. Well past five.
H12 Oil/shipping indicators stay contested and partial W 74% Confirmed — Brent above ninety against Trump's falling prices, Iran at zero exports against an IRGC tanker interception, a diversion count offered as a transit metric, and Asian refiners refusing Saudi crude. No consolidated series was adopted by anyone.

Summary: 10 confirmed, 1 partial, 1 refuted (~88% directionally correct, ~83% clean confirmations). The refutation is the useful result. H4 assumed succession legitimacy needed an external sponsor or a denial to defend against, and both assumptions were wrong: the title was simply used in a caption and nobody argued. Our instrument keeps reading contested constructions well and reading uncontested ones badly — the normalization that happens without an argument is invisible to a method tuned for divergence. Three of our confirmations (H2, H5, H8) also landed only after their named coordinate rotated, which is the standing signature and the reason we now write the structure into the test and treat the example as disposable.

Today's predictions

Review window: editorials published by ~22:00 UTC, August 18, 2026.

H1 (86%) [Type E]: The expired memorandum stays live in mutually exclusive versions, none retracted. #618 recorded extension, no-extension-sought, and no-ceasefire-ever running simultaneously across Saudi, Qatari, Russian, Israeli, and Iranian carriage. Confirmation is ≥2 incompatible characterizations of the memorandum's status co-present in the corpus without any carrier issuing a correction. Refutation is a retraction, or convergence on one status across ecosystem lines. We measure whether ambiguity is being maintained as an output, not what the document says.

H2 (85%) [Type E]: Any US claim of contact with Tehran draws a fast, uniform, multi-node Iranian denial. The "direct communication channel" claim was denied in roughly ninety minutes across Press TV, ISNA, BBC Persian, and Saudi-owned carriers. Kushner's thirty/sixty/ninety-day sequencing, relayed from Fox, is the next candidate object. Confirmation is ≥1 Iranian state or semi-state denial of a US contact or negotiation claim carried with the prepared cross-node signature. Refutation is Tehran letting such a claim stand, or a first-party channel confirmation entering the corpus. Follow Negotiations & Ceasefire Diplomacy.

H3 (82%) [Type E]: The Erbil counter-architecture holds its shape — false-flag and solidarity registers rather than a legal denial. #618 logged the sequence: an Iranian source telling Al Mayadeen "another false-flag operation," Baqaei calling the strike "highly suspicious," Araghchi addressing "our Kurdish friends" and invoking Saddam and ISIS, and the foreign minister relaying that he had no information the attacks came from inside Iran — a denial of knowledge, not authorship. Confirmation is ≥1 further Iranian-ecosystem construction in the false-flag or solidarity register, with the authorship question left formally open. Refutation is a categorical Iranian denial of responsibility, or an attribution settled across ecosystems. Follow Regional Focus: Iraq.

H4 (84%) [Type E]: Succession consolidation proceeds by assertion rather than argument — the successor's title used as settled fact with no legitimation campaign around it. This is the correction to yesterday's refuted H4. The mechanism observed was captioning, not endorsement. Confirmation is ≥1 Iranian state or semi-state outlet using the full leadership title in ordinary, unmarked carriage — caption, byline, routine reference — without accompanying justification. Refutation is a legitimation campaign appearing, an external sponsor being invoked, or the title reverting to hedged forms. We are testing whether normalization can complete without ever being contested.

H5 (80%) [Type E]: Host-nation consent erodes further in public — an ally or mediator objects on the record to belligerent use of its territory. #618 carried Trump threatening to bomb Oman, the state mediating for him, and Sadr telling the IRGC to stop striking Iraqi soil. Confirmation is ≥1 new public objection, condition, or threat concerning basing, overflight, or strikes from a host state, mediator, or domestic faction inside one. Refutation is the consent question going unspoken for a full window. Basing arrangements are normally negotiated in private; what we measure is how much of that negotiation is now being conducted in front of audiences.

H6 (81%) [Type E]: Strategic silence remains legible as content — a principal stays silent or off-topic on the window's central question. MID Russia published nothing on the memorandum's expiry and spent the day on Ghana and Duma polling stations; Xinhua offered food inflation and a carrier crew's mental health. Confirmation is ≥1 documented absence functioning as message: a principal silent on a claim about it, an interested carrier declining to specify, or a datapoint surfacing once and travelling nowhere. Refutation is the principals speaking directly into the corpus on the day's dominant claim. We read the omission as data.

H7 (88%) [Type EW]: Western and American utterances reach our corpus only through adversary and bystander mirrors. #618 delivered this at saturation — Trump, Kushner, the Energy Secretary, CENTCOM, a sitting senator, Reuters, and Lloyd's List all arrived reflected. Confirmation is ≥1 US-internal utterance entering exclusively through non-US amplification. Refutation is a US-origin story reaching us first-party, which our instrument flags as a relay anomaly rather than a content judgment. This is the structural feature of what we monitor, restated as a falsifiable test.

H8 (79%) [Type EW]: A single Western-origin text becomes load-bearing across ≥2 adversary ecosystems in tight timing toward one conclusion. The Perlmutter testimony cleared the ≥3-ecosystem bar this hypothesis had twice missed, running verbatim through Russian, Iranian, and Palestinian channels at once. We hold the probability below the confirmation rate because the clean version is an unusual event and this test has been volatile. Confirmation is ≥1 Western-origin text amplified by ≥2 adversary ecosystems in near-identical timing; ≥3 ecosystems is the clean hit. Refutation is Western reporting entering diffusely without synchronization. We measure the convergence, not the report's accuracy.

H9 (85%) [Type EW]: Selective grief persists — human-cost claims travel through the ecosystems with a stake in them and are absent from the ones without. #618 recorded Iran's own civilian losses documented mainly by exile-facing media, Minab carried by a resistance channel routing through a US senator, and Gulf-official and Chinese feeds absent from both. Confirmation is ≥2 human-cost categories carried without cross-reference, at least one named in one ecosystem and missing from another. Refutation is a single agreed tally, or a neutral body's cross-theater accounting circulating intact. Whose dead are amplified remains the tell. Follow Global South & Middle Powers.

H10 (83%) [Type EW]: An unverified claim hardens as it crosses ecosystem boundaries while the most interested carrier stays vague. The Tasluja fuel-tank fire acquired an Iranian drone in Intelslava's carriage and had no origin at all in Fars's — the same event, attributed and de-attributed by the parties with the clearest interest. Confirmation is ≥1 single-sourced claim carried across ≥2 ecosystem boundaries without independent confirmation, gaining specificity or neutral "media report" carriage en route while an interested principal declines to specify. Refutation is such claims being flagged as contested at every hop. We watch what travels on carriage alone.

H11 (86%) [Type W]: At least five new named military, maritime, financial, diplomatic, or casualty objects enter the editorial corpus. #618 produced well over a dozen, from the 293.4-million-barrel reserve figure to the Hadid-110 drones to the four pilots presumed captured in Qatar. The memorandum dispute, the Hormuz ledger, the Erbil attribution contest, and the fortieth-day domestic file all keep naming density above baseline. Confirmation is a tally from the next published editorial; refutation is a structurally quiet window far below recent density. The verdict is read from what the ecosystems choose to name, not from what exists.

H12 (76%) [Type W]: Energy, shipping, and sovereign-risk indicators stay contested and partial, with no consolidated series adopted. The last window carried Brent above ninety against an assertion that prices are falling, a reserve at a 44-year low, a diversion count offered where a transit count was owed, and war-risk cover being withdrawn from Saudi-linked vessels — none reconciled, and Press TV saying so out loud. We are also watching whether the cavern-integrity claim, so far single-channel, acquires a second source or stays where it started. Confirmation is ≥2 price, reserve, yield, traffic, or coverage figures co-present without a common source. Refutation is a single authoritative number adopted across ecosystems, which would be the most consequential convergence we could log on this file. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.

What we can't see

By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — NYT, WSJ, CNN, Reuters, Fox, CENTCOM — and this cycle was mirror-thick throughout: a US president's Hormuz claims, a cabinet secretary's blockade language, CENTCOM's own vessel count, and a senator's call for testimony all reached us reframed by parties with a stake in how they landed. The instrument was narrower than usual in other ways too. The last editorial window drew on 1,460 Telegram messages and zero web articles, meaning this cycle rests almost entirely on a Telegram layer that remains roughly 65% Russian milblog and state — and whose domestic Russian readership has been degraded since Moscow began blocking the platform in March, making our largest relay a possibly unrepresentative narrator of the war it half-covers. Iran's information environment still reaches us through state-curated channels shaped by the long internet blackout, biasing the corpus toward sources with the infrastructure to circumvent it, which is why commemorative liturgy travels at full volume while interior dissent surfaces mainly where the state's own agencies choose to report it. Two blind spots are acute now: we cannot audit what the Islamabad memorandum actually said or whether anything replaced it, since every version we hold is a carrier's version; and maritime and drone attribution in Iraqi Kurdistan and the Gulf sits precisely where our instrument goes dark, leaving the Tasluja fire and the Erbil strike to whichever ecosystem fills the silence first.
