This page predicts what stories will be told, not what will happen. We observe media ecosystems — not the war, not the oil market, not the negotiations. When a prediction says "oil above $95," it is testing whether the information conditions sustaining that price floor remain intact in our corpus, not offering a commodity call. When it says "Gulf framing fractures," it is predicting how editors and state media will behave, not how governments will act.
Type E predictions are about ecosystem behavior we directly observe: who amplifies whom, which narratives gain traction, what editorial patterns emerge. Type EW predictions are about how real events get differentially constructed across ecosystems. Type W predictions are about the world — our weakest category, because we see events only through the mirrors our sources hold up. The scored track record below is a measure of how well we read those mirrors, not a measure of privileged insight into the world they reflect.
The Daily Forecast
Iran Strikes Monitor — September 30, 2026
Day 215 of the US-Israeli air campaign against Iran. Hours 5115–5139 since first strikes at ~06:10 UTC, February 28.
This forecast covers editorials #679 through #680, published between 10:00 and 22:00 UTC on September 29. It scores yesterday's predictions against what our editorial corpus actually recorded, then offers new predictions for the next 24 hours.
How this works
This observatory monitors the information environment around the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, not the war itself. We track 55 web sources and roughly 50 Telegram channels spanning Chinese, Russian, Iranian, Israeli, Arab, Turkish and Global South ecosystems. A panel of seven simulated analysts produces an editorial meta-analysis twice daily, and each cycle we publish falsifiable predictions and score them in public. Predictions are typed: Type E (ecosystem behaviour we observe directly), Type W (world events visible only through ecosystem reflections), and Type EW (how one real-world event is differentially constructed across ecosystems).
These predictions are about what stories will be told, not what will happen. When we name a barrel figure, a toman rate, a casualty total or a hull, we are testing whether the information conditions that keep that object visible and contested in our corpus hold — not offering a verification, a trading signal or an intelligence estimate. By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — AP, Reuters, WSJ, Axios, NBC, CNN, Bloomberg, CNBC, Politico, Military Times, AFP. They reach us only as reflected, amplified and reframed by the ecosystems we study, often several mirrors deep. About our methodology.
Where we are
The denial has become better documented than the claim, in every direction at once. In #679 two leaks decayed in mirror image: an Axios report that Trump was ready to offer sanctions relief and unfrozen assets reached us only through Middle East Spectator, and it was Trump's Truth Social rebuttal — not the report — that travelled, through Al Jazeera Arabic three times over, TASS, Al Arabiya, Al Hadath, BBC Persian, Xinhua and Nigeria's Punch. The symmetrical leak ran the other way: Al Hadath reported Iran agreeing to suspend enrichment, relayed by TASS, and Press TV rejected it while naming the outlet's Saudi ownership as part of the rebuttal. One channel converted the whole affair into a credibility duel with a named reporter. We can evidence what everyone refuses to have said far better than what anyone said. Follow Negotiations & Ceasefire Diplomacy.
Hormuz has split into two files that no longer share a vocabulary. The volume claim and the price column are carried by different outlets: Rubio telling Fox News the strait is open near pre-conflict levels, Kpler transits at 9m bpd including ship-to-ship transfer, Trump asserting more oil left in two days than before the war — against Brent at $107, a US strategic reserve at 283.8m barrels, a Texas diesel emergency, UK diesel at a record and warnings of unprecedented European prices. The most granular transit datapoint in either window came from the Iranian army spokesman conceding to Al Jazeera Arabic that a small number of ships and small quantities of oil are getting through. Only BBC Persian joined the two halves. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.
An underdetermined incident gained detail as it moved away from its source. A vessel struck north of Khasab entered the corpus as a UKMTO advisory about an "unknown projectile," fire extinguished, ship sailed on — carried intact by ISNA, IRNA and Press TV, attributed by Fars to the private firm Ambrey. By afternoon Fars, citing unnamed local sources, had a drone firing on a "violating ship"; by evening, an exploded tanker under tow. No outlet in our corpus re-sourced the drone attribution. In #680 the same machinery ran in three directions on one firefight in Iranshahr, sorted as ISIS-affiliated insurgency, armed robbery and unspecified clashes — with Iran's own state wires choosing the least political category.
Two dated clocks now sit in the corpus and neither belongs to a negotiation. Kata'ib Hezbollah owns 1 October; the US withdrawal from Iraq was reported for 30 September by Intelslava, by the Iraqi joint command confirming departure from Harir, and by Reuters via SolovievLive — headlined by L'Orient Today as "leaving opening for Iran." Meanwhile Fars published an economist arguing Iran has a "36-day golden window" to the US midterms, and Netanyahu told an airbase audience there are indications of an attack before Israel's election. The electoral calendar is published copy in both ecosystems. Follow Regional Focus: Iraq.
Yesterday's scorecard
Both scored editorials were published after yesterday's forecast, with the standard one-hour window overlap. Seventh consecutive uncontaminated scoring set.
| # | Prediction | Type | P | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | Hormuz described in mutually exclusive terms inside one aligned bloc, ≥1 outlet makes the contradiction its subject | E | 86% | Partial. The first limb held cleanly inside the Iranian-aligned bloc: ISNA, IRNA and Press TV carried "unknown projectile, fire extinguished, no casualties" while Fars moved the same hull to an exploded tanker under tow, and the army spokesman conceded a trickle of transits against his own side's closure framing. The second limb was met only on the adjacent object — BBC Persian and Al Jazeera Arabic prosecuted the volume-versus-price residual, not the strait's status — and on the vessel itself no outlet remarked on the drift at all. |
| H2 | Cordon enumerated through commercial intermediaries and pending waivers while its authorizing text stays outside our corpus | E | 86% | Confirmed, ninth consecutive window. The Najaf governor denied issuing any suspension order, Mehr characterised it as a one-month US Treasury measure, Iraqi Airways resumed Najaf–Iran flights, and Tehran's spokeswoman called the ban "bullying." Mehr's characterisation is the closest anyone came to the operative language; nobody published, quoted or linked it. |
| H3 | Iraqi air-blockade file produces dated ultimatums from non-state actors while no binding Iraqi state instrument enters the corpus | E | 78% | Confirmed. Kata'ib Hezbollah's 1 October ultimatum stood, protests ran in Najaf and Maysan, and every Iraqi state contribution was a denial, an operational confirmation or a carrier's commercial decision. No cabinet decision, court ruling or aviation determination entered the corpus. |
| H4 | A state or state-aligned outlet reverses a factual commitment without publishing a correction | E | 80% | Partial. Fars carried "fire extinguished, ship sailed on" and, hours later, an exploded tanker under tow, with no correction notice anywhere — the predicted behaviour. But our own refutation clause fired in the same window: Middle East Spectator traced an evacuation rumour to its source and retracted it in eleven minutes, and Fars debunked the same rumour by naming the channels carrying it. Both behaviours in one window means our test does not discriminate. |
| H5 | Borrowed adversary authority load-bearing in ≥3 ecosystems, incl. a Western institution's own number used against Western policy | E | 82% | Confirmed, heavily. Reuters citing Kpler and the 283.8m-barrel reserve via TASS, CNBC via TASS, Bloomberg via TASS, WSJ export data via Al Jazeera Arabic, Military Times casualties via AJA, an EU official's €100bn via Radio Farda, $120bn in US fuel costs attributed to Newsom via IRNA, a Republican senator and Speaker Johnson's own concession amplified by Iranian state wires. The target of the argument supplied the arithmetic in at least six cases. |
| H6 | Arithmetic from bodies with no side reaches us only through belligerent-aligned carriage | E | 72% | Confirmed. UNHCR's warning that 8.3 million refugees may lose assistance moved through Gulf and Russian wires in identical two-line form, attached by nobody to anything; the Taiz Network tabulations reached us solely via Al Masirah. #680 recorded the stronger version: two complete Yemeni casualty universes passed through one window and not one independent humanitarian figure appeared in either. |
| H7 | Two co-published figures in tension from one ecosystem, the pairing performed only from outside it | EW | 78% | Confirmed twice. Fars and ISNA led with the Tehran bourse's 136,000-point jump while the rial's record 250,000 toman, ~70% inflation and food up 127% arrived through BBC Persian, Al Arabiya and the Israeli and Gulf press; AbuAliExpress was the outlet that noticed the shape of the rial's break. The US register did the same thing — normalised throughput and a 44-year-low reserve co-published, paired only by BBC Persian. |
| H8 | A countable object at ≥3 incompatible magnitudes, ≥1 named outlet makes the discrepancy its subject | EW | 78% | Confirmed, fourth consecutive set. Hormuz throughput arrived at four magnitudes (pre-conflict levels, 9m bpd, more than before the war, a small number of ships). The September casualty file arrived as 29 sailors and nine Marines all returned to duty, as eight Marines hit in a "secret Iranian attack," and as concealed losses per an Iranian commander in Press TV — three incompatible uses of one dataset, with Press TV prosecuting the gap by name. |
| H9 | A party confirms a process and denies its substance, the denial travelling into ≥2 ecosystems | EW | 74% | Confirmed, in both directions and through at least seven ecosystems. Trump's rebuttal outran the report it rebutted; Araghchi keyed his denial to the claim's age; Baghaei pre-emptively called reconstructions of the Qatari channel "baseless speculation." Meanwhile four actors described the same track incompatibly — Qatar says messages move, Grossi says no full-scale talks exist, Vance sets a two-month test, Iran's SNSC secretary says Trump "cannot decide." |
| H10 | A sourced figure acquires an unsourced multiplier inside its own aligned aggregator tier | EW | 70% | Partial. The mechanism ran exactly where we relocated it — inside the origin ecosystem, before any boundary crossing — but what inflated was specificity and severity, not magnitude: an unknown projectile became a drone attack became an exploded tanker, each step citing unnamed local sources. We correctly moved the measurement upstream and then over-specified the dimension of the drift, which is the same error as H3, H7 and H10 in the last set wearing different clothes. |
| H11 | ≥8 new named objects across ≥3 categories, incl. a new maritime, energy or financial print | W | 86% | Confirmed, twentieth consecutive window. 9m bpd including ship-to-ship, a 30m-barrel release in preparation, 250,000 then 252,000 toman, a 136,000-point bourse jump, twelve staples frozen for six months, rail freight up tenfold, 400,000 bpd of rail crude capacity, 17-to-20-day truck backups, €100bn/$113.3bn/$113.5bn, $120bn, diesel past $6 and up 60%, ~70% inflation and food +127%, 230 million cubic metres of lost gas capacity, 8.3 million refugees, 1,213 wounded disaggregated by age and sex, 1,158 Saudi strikes, 1,033 violations, 414 operations, a 36-day window, Khasab, Harir, Iranshahr, Malard. |
| H12 | The only dated instrument remains a non-state ultimatum while every state-level clock stays undated | W | 58% | Refuted. Our own refutation clause fired: 30 September entered the corpus as a US withdrawal date through three ecosystems, with a named Iraqi state body confirming departure from Harir. Mehr dated the air measure at one month, Vance set a two-month behavioural test, and Fars published a 36-day window to the midterms. We priced this at 58% because a single dated statement ends it. Four arrived. |
Summary: 8 confirmed, 3 partial, 1 refuted, against a mean stated probability of 77%. The refutation was correctly priced and is the least interesting line in the table. The three partials share the defect we named yesterday and failed to fix: in H1 we specified which object would be prosecuted, in H10 we specified which dimension would inflate, and in H4 we wrote a test whose confirmation and refutation conditions can both be satisfied by one window. The instruction we keep giving ourselves — predict that the machinery turns, not which way — now has a corollary: predict that a quantity drifts, without naming the axis.
Today's predictions
Review window: editorials published through ~22:00 UTC, September 30, 2026.
H1 (88%) [Type E]: An underdetermined incident accretes descriptive or attributive detail in onward carriage with no new named source appearing. Yesterday's Khasab vessel went from a UKMTO advisory about an unknown projectile to a drone firing on a "violating ship" to an exploded tanker under tow, all inside one ecosystem and all on unnamed local sources. Confirmation is any incident entering our corpus through a maritime advisory, a private security firm, or a provincial official that acquires at least one additional causal, attributive or descriptive element in later carriage, with no outlet citing a new identifiable source for the addition. Refutation is later carriage re-sourcing the addition, hedging it at publication, or dropping it. We deliberately do not specify which direction the detail drifts — that specification is what made yesterday's version a partial.
H2 (86%) [Type E]: The enforcement cordon keeps being enumerated through intermediaries, carve-outs and durations while its authorizing text stays outside our corpus. Nine consecutive windows. The closest anyone has come is Mehr characterising the air measure as a one-month US Treasury action without quoting a line of it. Confirmation is further named carriers, handlers, exemptions or crossings complying, refusing or resuming, with no outlet publishing, quoting or linking the operative language. Refutation is the document circulating, or a Treasury-origin item reaching us other than through a belligerent-aligned relay.
H3 (76%) [Type E]: The Iraqi file's dated instruments stay owned by non-state actors and military calendars while Iraqi civil state material stays denial-shaped. Kata'ib Hezbollah's 1 October falls inside this window against a 30 September withdrawal date, with the Najaf governor's contribution so far being a denial that he issued anything. Confirmation is that deadline being met, extended, elapsed or restated while Iraqi state carriage remains a denial, an administrative reference or an anonymous attribution. Refutation is a cabinet decision, court ruling or aviation-authority determination entering the corpus as a text, or the factional tier going quiet.
H4 (64%) [Type E]: At least one outlet or aggregator performs debunking rather than counter-messaging on a rumour circulating in its own aligned space. Middle East Spectator amplified a seven-country evacuation rumour, traced it to a named adversary account and retracted it within eleven minutes; Fars then denied it while naming the channels carrying it. Both behaviours are rare, which is why we price this below our standing measures. Confirmation is any outlet in our corpus explicitly identifying, retracting or naming the origin of a claim its own bloc is circulating. Refutation is rumours met only with counter-claims, or left to run unremarked — the default we have recorded for 214 days.
H5 (82%) [Type E]: Borrowed adversary authority is load-bearing in ≥3 ecosystems, including one case where an institution's own figure is turned against its own government's policy. Yesterday's clearest instances were a Speaker of the House conceding the expected boom met the Iran war, a Republican senator calling for it to end, and a US fuel-cost figure attributed to a state governor — all amplified by Iranian state wires. Confirmation is three or more ecosystems resting a claim primarily on Western reporting or Western official data they do not own, with at least one instance where the figure's producer is the target of the argument. Refutation is ecosystems asserting in their own names, or citing Western material only as an adversary to be rebutted.
H6 (74%) [Type E]: Officials or provincial bodies issue ≥2 separate explanations of ambient anomalies as benign. Three arrived in one window: IRGC provincial offices explaining blasts in Malard and eastern Hormozgan as controlled demolition of unexploded ordnance, and a governor explaining border detonations as Azerbaijani demining. Confirmation is two or more official, provincial or military statements attributing an audible or visible event to demolition, exercise, accident or maintenance. Refutation is anomalies passing without official explanation, or the state itself claiming them as attacks. We are measuring the reassurance a state feels obliged to issue, which is the only war-fatigue proxy our instrument holds.
H7 (78%) [Type EW]: Two figures in tension are co-published by one ecosystem, and the pairing is made explicit only from outside it. Fars and ISNA led with a 136,000-point bourse jump while the rial's record, 70% inflation and 127% food inflation reached us through external and adversary carriage; an Israeli OSINT channel supplied the juxtaposition. Confirmation is two claims or figures from one ecosystem that cut against each other, with the contradiction stated by an outlet in a different ecosystem and by nobody inside. Refutation is an outlet reconciling its own numbers, or the contradiction going unremarked everywhere.
H8 (78%) [Type EW]: A countable object arrives at ≥3 incompatible magnitudes and at least one named outlet makes the gap its subject. Four consecutive sets, most recently on Hormuz throughput and on the September US casualty file. Confirmation requires both limbs: a countable object — transits, barrels, prices, tomans, casualties, flights, strikes — carried at three or more mutually inconsistent magnitudes, and a named outlet whose story is the discrepancy rather than one of the figures. Refutation is three magnitudes circulating with nobody prosecuting the contradiction, which is what happened on the Khasab hull yesterday even as it happened elsewhere.
H9 (76%) [Type EW]: A pre-emption statement from one side is carried by the other's ecosystem as evidence for its own threat assessment. Netanyahu told an airbase audience there are indications of an attack before the election; hours later the Iranian army spokesman said Tehran will strike first if it concludes an attack is imminent, with an Israeli channel rendering the added line that the doctrine changed from defence to offence. Confirmation is at least one further first-strike, preventive-war or imminence claim from either principal, carried into the adversary's ecosystem and used there to justify its own posture. Refutation is either side disavowing pre-emption, or such statements staying inside their origin ecosystem.
H10 (72%) [Type EW]: One security incident is sorted into incompatible categories by three ecosystems. The Iranshahr firefight was ISIS-affiliated insurgency with foreign backing to an OSINT aggregator, armed robbery to Fars and Mehr, and unspecified heavy clashes to BBC Persian citing a local outlet. Confirmation is a single incident — a firefight, a blast, a fire, an outage — carried under three mutually exclusive category labels across three ecosystems within the window. We are not predicting which ecosystem takes which label; yesterday the domestic state press chose the least political one, and if that repeats we will note it as an observation, not as part of the test. Refutation is convergence on one category, or the incident drawing carriage from only one bloc.
H11 (86%) [Type W]: At least eight new named objects enter the corpus across ≥3 categories, including a new maritime, energy or financial print. Twenty consecutive windows above threshold. Confirmation is a tally from the next published editorials, with the transit-price-reserve-volume category producing at least one magnitude not already in circulation — a fresh benchmark, retail print, stockpile level or spread rather than a recycled one. Refutation is a structurally quiet window, or energy and maritime reporting that only repeats yesterday's figures. This is a measure of our instrument's fill rate as much as the environment's.
H12 (62%) [Type W]: Electoral timing stays published copy, with at least one outlet explicitly dating escalation, restraint or a deal to a vote. Fars ran an economist arguing for a 36-day golden window to the US midterms; Bloomberg via TASS reported Iranian officials doubting any deal before November; Netanyahu framed an attack window around Israel's election and briefed the opposition leader. Confirmation is at least one outlet in any ecosystem timing a military, economic or diplomatic move to the midterms or the Israeli election, in its own copy rather than in a quoted aside. Refutation is electoral timing receding into subtext, or a dated diplomatic instrument displacing the electoral clock as the corpus's reference calendar.
What we can't see
By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly: yesterday the Axios sanctions-relief report, the Kpler transit figure, the WSJ export data, the Military Times injury count, the CNBC price warning and the Bloomberg deal-scepticism story all reached us through belligerent-aligned intermediaries, each keeping a different half — and in the Axios case we have never seen the original text, only the rebuttal that outran it. Iran's information environment arrives through channels curated by the long internet blackout, biasing toward sources with the infrastructure to circumvent it. Three blind spots are acute today. We hold no maritime, insurance, port or hydrographic layer, which is why one hull north of Khasab acquired a drone, an explosion and a tow in twelve hours with nothing in our corpus able to arbitrate any of it. We have no distillate layer either: a crude benchmark, a retail diesel print and a strategic reserve level are not a fuel market, and the gap between normalised volumes and record pump prices is the single largest unexplained residual we are carrying. And our largest collector remains oriented elsewhere — on the Russian channels we scrape, Hormuz and Iraq again drew a small fraction of the volume spent on unrelated subjects, so our biggest source bloc contributed almost nothing independent to the two files that dominated both windows. We again withheld items resting on one channel with no echo, which is the correct call and a reminder that our corpus records what circulated, not what happened.
Check back tomorrow. We'll score every prediction above against the editorial record and tell you exactly where we were right, where we were wrong, and what the misses reveal.
