What kind of predictions are these?
This page predicts what stories will be told, not what will happen. We observe media ecosystems — not the war, not the oil market, not the negotiations. When a prediction says "oil above $95," it is testing whether the information conditions sustaining that price floor remain intact in our corpus, not offering a commodity call. When it says "Gulf framing fractures," it is predicting how editors and state media will behave, not how governments will act.

Type E predictions are about ecosystem behavior we directly observe: who amplifies whom, which narratives gain traction, what editorial patterns emerge. Type EW predictions are about how real events get differentially constructed across ecosystems. Type W predictions are about the world — our weakest category, because we see events only through the mirrors our sources hold up. The scored track record below is a measure of how well we read those mirrors, not a measure of privileged insight into the world they reflect.

Iran Strikes Monitor — August 22, 2026

Day 176 of the US-Israeli air campaign against Iran. Hours 4179–4203 since first strikes at ~06:10 UTC, February 28.

This forecast covers editorials #624 through #625, published between 10:07 and 22:04 UTC on August 21. It scores yesterday's predictions against what our editorial corpus actually recorded, then offers twelve new predictions for the next 24 hours.

How this works

This observatory monitors the information environment around the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, not the war itself. We track 55 web sources and ~50 Telegram channels spanning Chinese, Russian, Iranian, Israeli, Arab, Turkish and Global South ecosystems. A panel of seven simulated analysts produces an editorial meta-analysis twice daily, and each cycle we publish falsifiable predictions and score them transparently. Predictions are typed: Type E (ecosystem behavior we observe directly), Type W (world events visible only through ecosystem reflections), and Type EW (how one real-world event is differentially constructed across ecosystems).

These predictions are about what stories will be told, not what will happen. When we name a transit count, a casualty figure or an interceptor inventory, we are testing whether the information conditions that keep that object visible and contested in our corpus hold — not offering a verification, a trading signal or an intelligence estimate. By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — NYT, WSJ, CNN, CBS, Reuters, CENTCOM, Axios. They reach us only as reflected, amplified and reframed by the ecosystems we study, often several mirrors deep. About our methodology.

Where we are

An off-ramp became legible to every ecosystem simultaneously, and the only party that attacked it was Iranian. #625 recorded Pezeshkian's formulation — better to end the war today, while Iran stands in a position of strength and the world acknowledges its victory — travelling further and faster than anything else in the corpus: Al Jazeera Arabic as a five-flash sequence, Al Mayadeen as six, Al Arabiya and Al Hadath under a concession-adjacent headline, BBC Persian in full, abualiexpress in Hebrew with the "power and honour" clause preserved. Not one ecosystem translated it as surrender. The rebuke came from Farsna, which had carried the president's remarks hours earlier and then published an unsigned attack on "bankrupt politicians" whose language has migrated into the presidency, while Foreign Minister Araghchi supplied the hardline register: "same bull, different bullies." One state outlet hosting both the statement and the attack on it is the clearest elite-disagreement signal our corpus has surfaced in weeks. Follow Negotiations & Ceasefire Diplomacy.

The case for American exhaustion is now dense enough to function as a planning input, and it is built entirely out of American reporting. Across both windows, TASS relayed the WSJ on allied doubt and MS Now on air-conditioning and toilet failures aboard the Lincoln; solovievlive relayed Clash Report relaying an unnamed source tying those failures to a destroyed naval logistics hub in Bahrain; PressTV cited CBS that nearly all long-range missiles are gone; isna94 relayed Petraeus saying regional US bases are no longer usable; cig_telegram asserted ~80% of THAAD and ~50% of Patriot interceptors expended; OSINTdefender put 5 of 18 Patriot operators at elevated stocks. What presents as international convergence is one national press being read back at itself in six languages, assembled by channels with an interest in the conclusion. The counter-image arrived in Persian: BBC Persian carrying CENTCOM's own night-flight footage from the George Washington.

Hormuz has a shared number and no shared method. Kpler's count of seven vessels transiting on Thursday crossed six ecosystem boundaries in roughly six hours — Al Jazeera Arabic, BBC Persian, Mehr, cig_telegram, isna94, TASS — with no dispute from any direction. A private analytics vendor has become this war's arbiter on its central question and nobody in the corpus has audited it. It sits unreconciled beside the vice president's claim that up to 15 million barrels a day still move, CENTCOM's 67 diverted ships since July, and the only non-belligerent quantifying his own losses: Iraq's prime minister, at roughly 10 percent of normal exports, with pipeline alternatives he called "patchwork and timid." BBC Persian, citing the IMO, put 20,000 seafarers in the crisis; Anadolu was alone in asking what a queued fleet's ballast water does to the Gulf. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.

Iran's ecosystem changed register, and turned the lens on itself. Ministers are now counting in public: 66,000 wounded, ~70 hospitals damaged, ~220 ambulances destroyed, more than 350 children killed, 149 heritage sites, 9% hotel occupancy at Nowruz. That is an accountability ledger, not a martyrology, and it circulated almost entirely inside Persian-language and resistance-aligned space. Running alongside it: the fortieth-day mourning liturgy across Mashhad, Karbala, Moscow, Berlin and Tbilisi, in which the burial chamber becomes the House of Remembrance; the first vice president's office formally denying a fabricated petrol-price quote; and an isna94 panel titled "the information dead-end," in which a state agency published the thesis that Iranian media have been reduced to relaying officials and then blamed for having no public authority. Yesterday's scorecard

# Prediction Type P Verdict
H1 Sanctions rhetoric and paperwork stay separated, unreconciled E 84% Partial — the separation held, but not the way we specified. Our confirmation required collapse-scale language co-present with a discrete ordinary-scale instrument. No designation, advisory or enforcement action entered either window at all. Qalibaf's sanctions remarks and Al Arabiya Business's two-losers framing carried the rhetoric; the paperwork simply left the corpus.
H2 Two American end-states co-present; Iranian carriage resolves toward collapse E 83% Partial — both registers arrived (Trump's "we eliminated the Iranian leadership," the vice president's failed-closure claim), but Iranian carriage resolved them toward ridicule rather than collapse: Mehr filed the Hormuz assertion under "Trump's repeated claim," Fars under "the delusional US president's repeated claims." Arguing with the repetition, not the content.
H3 Tehran makes its case out of American-origin material E 86% ConfirmedPressTV citing CBS that nearly all long-range missiles are gone; isna94 relaying Petraeus on unusable bases; PressTV on the Pentagon acknowledging 750+ wounded. The behaviour held; the file moved from economics to munitions.
H4 Hormuz figures stay incommensurable, ≥2 methods unreconciled E 85% Confirmed — a commercial tracker at seven transits, a political claim at 15m bpd, a CENTCOM rerouting tally at 67, an Iraqi export share at 10%, five transits on 15 August via TASS. No outlet reconciled them.
H5 Western self-criticism re-carried as established fact E 85% Confirmed — at saturation, and named as such in #625. WSJ, WaPo, CBS, CNN, NYT, Le Point and MS Now all arrived through Russian or Iranian carriage with hedges thinned or stripped.
H6 Leadership and command question stays externally constructed E 70% Partial — externally raised, then domestically answered. rybar_mena reported six senior appointments approved by Mojtaba Khamenei; but isna94, PressTV and Al Mayadeen carried the Chief of the General Staff and the acting defence minister producing textbook deterrent language. The apparatus is signalling, which is closer to corroboration than we priced.
H7 Western utterances reach us only through mirrors EW 89% Confirmed — total. Both editorials rested on Telegram alone, zero web articles, with every Western-origin item arriving second- or third-hand.
H8 Iran's current costs published by hostile outlets; state media commemorates EW 84% Refuted — cleanly, and by the exact condition we named. isna94 published the health minister's 66,000 wounded, ~70 hospitals and ~220 ambulances; 350+ children killed; 149 heritage sites and 9% hotel occupancy followed. Iranian state agencies are now publishing current damage in their own names.
H9 A symbolic object out-carries any operational claim EW 74% Partial — ceremonial material did fracture (the Baghdad visit rendered as shrine send-off with "death to America" chants in Persian and as a resistance greeting at Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis's grave, while the Iraqi PM told Al Jazeera all forces agree on confining weapons to the state). But the window's highest-carriage item was a political statement, and an Ansarallah drone compilation travelled eight hops into armour-survivability analysis.
H10 Contested method becomes its own subject EW 79% Confirmed — four instances: the Pentagon moving to fire the Stars and Stripes publisher, a pledge to hunt shortage whistleblowers, the "information dead-end" panel, and an official denial of a fabricated petrol-price quote. Plus 150+ Polymarket wallets as an alleged leak vector.
H11 ≥5 new named objects enter the corpus W 88% Confirmed — far past five: 7 transits, 67 diverted ships, 66,000 wounded, 70 hospitals, 220 ambulances, 750+ US wounded, 20,000 seafarers, 1,500 stranded ships, 8,915 and 30,543 in Lebanon, 4,348 post-March, 149 heritage sites, 9% occupancy, 80%/50% interceptor depletion, 5 of 18 Patriot operators, six appointments, 19 Houthi funerals.
H12 Energy indicators contested, payer named at most once W 72% Partial — the contest half confirmed; the payer half failed. At least three cost-bearers were quantified: Iraq at 10% of normal exports, European consumers at an €800 gas print, and 20,000 seafarers via the IMO. The cost of the blockade has acquired named victims.

Summary: 6 confirmed, 5 partial, 1 refuted (~92% directionally correct, 50% clean confirmations.) The refutation is the most useful result we have logged in a week: H8 failed because the behaviour it described genuinely changed, and our refutation clause was specific enough to catch it. Iran's ministries have moved from martyrology to arithmetic, and that is a real shift in state information practice, not a corpus artefact. The recurring weakness is unchanged — for a third consecutive cycle, a high-confidence prediction that named a specific file (H1, sanctions paperwork) failed not by contradiction but by displacement. Today's set again prices agenda displacement into every file-specific call and puts our confidence into mechanisms.

Today's predictions

Review window: editorials published by ~22:00 UTC, August 22, 2026.

H1 (85%) [Type E]: Iran's bureaucratic damage accounting continues and stays inside Persian and resistance-aligned space. The register shift is new and we expect it to persist before it travels. Confirmation is ≥1 further Iranian ministry, agency or provincial authority publishing a current casualty, infrastructure, heritage or economic-loss figure in its own name, with no pickup in Gulf, Russian, Chinese or Israeli carriage in the same window. Refutation is either a return to purely commemorative framing, or one of these figures crossing an ecosystem boundary and being argued with. We are measuring the market for a belligerent's own damage numbers, and so far there isn't one.

H2 (76%) [Type E]: Iranian elite disagreement stays visible inside state and semi-state carriage. Farsna hosted both the president's off-ramp and an unsigned attack on it within hours. Confirmation is ≥1 further item in Iranian state or semi-state media that criticises, qualifies or pointedly ignores an official Iranian negotiating or war-termination formulation, or two Iranian outlets rendering the same official statement in incompatible registers. Refutation is a single synchronised line across IRNA, Mehr, Fars, PressTV and isna94. We have set this below instinct because the off-ramp is exactly the kind of file our instrument has twice watched get displaced.

H3 (86%) [Type E]: The American depletion case keeps being assembled from Western-origin reporting, with no first-party inventory data anywhere in the corpus. Interceptor percentages, Patriot readiness tiers, carrier-fitness claims and whistleblower reprisals all reached us as reflections. Confirmation is ≥1 further munitions, readiness, basing or fleet-condition claim entering through Russian, Iranian or aggregator carriage whose load-bearing evidence is Western reporting, with no primary document or official inventory statement. Refutation is a first-party US inventory disclosure, or the argument being dropped. The dependency is the finding: if Western outlets stop publishing critical assessments, this argument loses its supply.

H4 (80%) [Type E]: Unattributed intent claims recur, and at least one is re-carried without its original hedge. Strikes on Gulf terminals, economic warfare timed to the November midterms, threats to European targets — three of the most escalatory items in #624 had no named source, no official channel and no corroboration. Confirmation is ≥1 new claim about a belligerent's intentions entering through the aggregator layer without named sourcing, or one of the existing three reappearing as settled. Refutation is escalation claims arriving with named officials or official channels attached. Intent claims travel further than capability evidence and get absorbed into threat assessments as though they were the same thing.

H5 (79%) [Type E]: A commercial or third-party dataset crosses ≥3 ecosystems without dispute or audit. Kpler's seven-vessel count crossed six in six hours; Lloyd's List was imported by a Houthi outlet to complicate its own side's blockade claim; the IMO supplied the seafarer figure. Confirmation is ≥1 vendor, insurer, classification-society, IMO or exchange figure appearing in ≥3 ecosystems with no methodological challenge from any of them. Refutation is any outlet interrogating the method, or belligerents disputing a commercial number the way they dispute each other's claims. Belligerent claims get symmetrical skepticism in this corpus; commercial data gets none.

H6 (70%) [Type E]: Rumour management remains a visible official function in Iranian state carriage. The first vice president's office formally denied a fabricated 80,000-toman petrol quote, in the same feed as a panel diagnosing state media's credibility collapse. Confirmation is ≥1 further official Iranian denial, correction or authentication notice directed at material circulating on unofficial channels, or a further item whose subject is Iranian media's own standing. Refutation is a window with no such item. When an agency has to certify what it did not say, the certification is the story.

H7 (89%) [Type EW]: Western and American utterances reach our corpus exclusively through adversary and bystander mirrors. Seven consecutive windows at saturation, both of yesterday's editorials built on Telegram with zero web articles. Confirmation is ≥1 US or Western-origin utterance entering only through non-Western amplification. Refutation is a US-origin story reaching us first-party, which our instrument treats as a relay anomaly rather than a content judgment. This is the structural condition of what we monitor, restated as a falsifiable test.

H8 (82%) [Type EW]: One statement fractures at the point of translation into ≥3 incompatible political meanings. Qalibaf's Baghdad sanctions remarks became a fragility admission in BBC Persian, a planning exhortation in Al Arabiya and Al Hadath, and a denunciation of foreign plunder in Al Mayadeen — one speech, three politics, selected in the rendering. Confirmation is ≥1 speech, statement or communiqué rendered in ≥3 ecosystems with materially different political meanings, all defensible as translations. Refutation is a major statement carried with consistent emphasis across Persian, Arabic, Hebrew and Russian carriage. Translation is where this war's editorial decisions are least visible and most consequential.

H9 (75%) [Type EW]: A non-belligerent quantifies its own losses and is under-amplified relative to a belligerent claim in the same window. Iraq's prime minister put his exports at 10 percent of normal and it travelled a fraction as far as a seven-vessel transit count. Confirmation is ≥1 third-party state, agency or industry body publishing a specific figure for damage it is absorbing, with visibly lower cross-ecosystem carriage than a contested belligerent claim in the same editorial. Refutation is a bystander's loss figure becoming the window's most-carried object. We are testing whether the information environment has any appetite for costs that do not support anyone's case.

H10 (76%) [Type EW]: Contested method becomes its own subject again. Four instances yesterday: a publisher's removal, a whistleblower hunt, a state agency diagnosing its own media's collapse, an official denial of a fabricated quote — plus a prediction market alleged as a leak vector. Confirmation is ≥1 further item whose primary subject is an attempt to control, discredit, litigate, fabricate or synthesise reporting. Refutation is a window in which every item is about events rather than about how events are rendered. Ecosystems are now contesting each other's method openly, and that contest is documentable.

H11 (87%) [Type W]: At least five new named military, maritime, financial, diplomatic or casualty objects enter the editorial corpus. The last two windows produced more than twenty, from 220 destroyed ambulances to 5 of 18 Patriot operators. The Hormuz counts, the depletion ledger, the Iranian damage accounts and the Lebanese and West Bank casualty files all keep naming density well above baseline. Confirmation is a tally from the next published editorial; refutation is a structurally quiet window far below recent density. The verdict is read from what the ecosystems choose to name, not from what exists.

H12 (72%) [Type W]: Hormuz counts stay method-incommensurable, and ≥2 distinct cost-bearers are quantified. We inverted the second clause after yesterday's miss: the payer is no longer named once, it is named repeatedly — Iraq at 10 percent, Europe at €800, 20,000 seafarers, 1,500 stranded hulls. Confirmation is ≥2 transit, volume or rerouting figures from visibly different methods with no common series, co-present with ≥2 separately quantified parties absorbing the cost. Refutation is convergence on a single dataset across ecosystem lines, or a window in which the disruption is priced only in barrels and not in bearers. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.

What we can't see

By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly, and both of yesterday's windows were mirror-thick throughout: the WSJ via a Russian state wire, CBS via an Iranian broadcaster, CNN and NYT via TASS, Le Point via TASS, Kpler via six ecosystems at once, CENTCOM's own footage via a British-funded Persian service. Both editorials rested on Telegram alone — 1,160 and 1,500 messages, zero web articles — meaning today's forecast draws on a layer that remains roughly 65% Russian milblog and state, and whose domestic Russian readership has been degraded since Moscow began blocking the platform in March. Iran's information environment still reaches us through state-curated channels shaped by the long internet blackout, biasing the corpus toward sources with the infrastructure to circumvent it. Three blind spots are acute this cycle: we cannot audit the commercial vendor whose transit count six ecosystems have adopted as fact; we cannot distinguish a signalling apparatus from a functioning command structure, which is precisely the gap both "nobody knows who is running Iran" and six announced senior appointments are arguing over; and we cannot test any element of the munitions-depletion case, every load-bearing number of which reached us through channels that benefit from the conclusion.

Check back tomorrow. We'll score every prediction above against the editorial record and tell you exactly where we were right, where we were wrong, and what the misses reveal.
