This page predicts what stories will be told, not what will happen. We observe media ecosystems — not the war, not the oil market, not the negotiations. When a prediction says "oil above $95," it is testing whether the information conditions sustaining that price floor remain intact in our corpus, not offering a commodity call. When it says "Gulf framing fractures," it is predicting how editors and state media will behave, not how governments will act.
Type E predictions are about ecosystem behavior we directly observe: who amplifies whom, which narratives gain traction, what editorial patterns emerge. Type EW predictions are about how real events get differentially constructed across ecosystems. Type W predictions are about the world — our weakest category, because we see events only through the mirrors our sources hold up. The scored track record below is a measure of how well we read those mirrors, not a measure of privileged insight into the world they reflect.
The Daily Forecast
Iran Strikes Monitor — July 20, 2026
Day 143 of the US-Israeli air campaign against Iran. Hours 3387–3411 since first strikes at ~06:10 UTC, February 28.
This forecast covers editorials #589 through #590, published between 10:00 and 22:00 UTC yesterday. It scores the previous forecast's twelve predictions against what our editorial corpus actually recorded, then offers twelve new predictions for the next 24 hours.
How this works
This observatory monitors the information environment around the US-Israeli strikes on Iran — not the war itself. We track 55 web sources and ~50 Telegram channels spanning Chinese, Russian, Iranian, Israeli, Arab, Turkish, and Global South ecosystems. Twice daily a panel of seven simulated analysts produces an editorial meta-analysis, and each cycle we publish falsifiable predictions and score them transparently. Predictions are typed: Type E (ecosystem behavior we observe directly), Type W (world events visible only through ecosystem reflections), and Type EW (how one real-world event is differentially constructed across ecosystems).
These predictions are about what stories will be told, not what will happen. When we name an oil figure, a reserve level, a vessel count, or a casualty tally, we are testing whether the information conditions that keep that object visible and contested in our corpus hold — not offering a verification, a trading signal, or an intelligence estimate. By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — NYT, WSJ, CNN, Fox, Bloomberg, CENTCOM — they reach us only as reflected, amplified, and reframed by the ecosystems we study, often several mirrors deep. About our methodology.
Where we are
American combat deaths entered the corpus, and the ecosystems metabolized them at different speeds and in different directions. #589 recorded CENTCOM confirming two US service members killed and one missing in Jordan; #590 recorded the follow-on statement — unidentified remains at the Jordan site, one killed in northern Iraq during controlled detonation of ordnance from a downed Iranian drone. The propagation chain is the cleanest artifact we have logged in weeks: Fars rendered the statement as a "confession," Mehr as "the terrorist organization CENTCOM confesses," Intel Slava asserted a third soldier was "vaporized," and Boris Rozhin wrote that twelve are claimed unofficially. Statement → confession → vaporized → twelve, with only the first rung sourced. Follow Strike Operations & Targets.
The belligerency map widened to the Gulf littoral and then to Jordan. #589 logged Iran's announced drone strikes on Kuwait's Ali Al Salem and Al-Udeiri, Kuwait's army confirming engagement, and Bahrain claiming interceptions and suspending Manama airport operations — hosts entering the belligerent-claim economy while answering only in interception language. #590 then recorded the Aqaba strike, where Jordan states three of four missiles were intercepted and the fourth fell in a remote area. Around that ambiguous debris event, an Israeli construction assembled itself: Katz pre-committing to retaliation "without any dependence or conditions," the security establishment briefing that Iran is preparing to return to war with Israel, Haaretz framing Netanyahu as awaiting a green light. Absent from the construction: any Iranian statement in the window declaring intent to strike Israel.
Two navies claimed the same four hulls. CENTCOM says it redirected six commercial vessels and disabled one under its blockade regime; the IRGC Navy says four vessels ignored warnings, two suffered "accidents," two turned back. Neither claim is independently verifiable in our corpus. What is observable is the condition they jointly produce — a contested strait rather than a closed one, where insurers cannot price risk and masters take mutually exclusive instructions from two fleets, and where AzerNews reports Iraq trucking fuel overland through Syria. Meanwhile the hardest published series in the window drew almost no traffic: the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve at 331.2 million barrels, its lowest since 1983, against the Energy Secretary's claim that Hormuz closure reports are wrong. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.
The Iranian establishment narrated cohesion loudest where the ground is softest. Mojtaba Khamenei reached for "Great Satan" for the first time since assuming leadership, per Guancha — the vocabulary of 1979 returning as the diplomatic track closes. Beneath it, a full-apparatus "sacred unity" cascade ran alongside Araghchi's admission that the ceasefire was accepted in "smaller sessions than the Supreme National Security Council," the rial past 1,945,000, a seventh straight bourse decline, two executions and files opened against three hundred people. Follow Khamenei: Death & Succession.
Yesterday's scorecard
We score the previous forecast's twelve predictions against #589 and #590.
| # | Prediction | Type | P | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | Pro-Western aggregator layer keeps breaking character | E | 85% | Confirmed — Middle East Spectator geolocated interceptions with rigor all afternoon, then closed the evening posting a mocking "lifehack" about not stationing soldiers on other people's land. A register break inside a single day. |
| H2 | Host-nation threshold stays a two-sided contest | E | 85% | Confirmed — Iran announced strikes on Kuwait's Ali Al Salem and Al-Udeiri; Kuwait's army answered in engagement/interception language, Bahrain in interception language, Jordan with "three of four intercepted." No host announced joining the offensive. |
| H3 | Claim architecture stays signaling-first, hardest datapoint from a non-combatant | E | 84% | Confirmed — the eighth consecutive US strike series and the IRGC's four-hull account ran unverified, while Kuwait's electricity ministry supplied the firm datum by confirming its own desalination plant struck twice in two days. |
| H4 | Iranian register split between cohesion-management and suppression | E | 83% | Confirmed — four institutional voices insisting within nine hours that there is no factional split, co-present with two executions, an espionage-law warning, and files opened against three hundred people. |
| H5 | Succession register stays depersonalized; Mojtaba absent | E | 82% | Refuted — Mojtaba Khamenei spoke directly, calling Trump's signature "worthless" and using "Great Satan" for the first time since assuming leadership, carried by Xinhua, Al-Manar and Guancha. The depersonalized pattern we had ridden since March broke. |
| H6 | China's energy-lens framing recurs | E | 81% | Partial — Chinese state outlets carried the Mojtaba speech and the Darkhovin strike, but the US-as-protection-racket energy framing we specified did not recur in these windows. The ecosystem was present; the frame was not. |
| H7 | Western utterances reach us only through mirrors | EW | 88% | Confirmed — Trump's "it happens, it's just one of those things" reached us via Middle East Spectator and cig_telegram citing NewsNation; the WSJ influence-campaign story and the NYT/WSJ airframe-damage claims arrived entirely through relay. |
| H8 | Casualty partition holds; no neutral tally | EW | 86% | Confirmed — Iran's health ministry published 517 injured and 50+ killed as a PR chief's X post; Lebanon's 4,328 and Gaza's 1,168 travelled nowhere. The IFRC came closest to a neutral statement and named no belligerent, which is why almost no one carried it. |
| H9 | Hormuz narrated in incompatible registers over quieter data | EW | 85% | Confirmed — two navies claiming the same four hulls, the Energy Secretary's ~14 million bpd claim against an SPR at its lowest since 1983, and Iraq trucking fuel through Syria as the substitution nobody makes while believing either navy. |
| H10 | One event stays a differential-construction war | EW | 83% | Confirmed — the CENTCOM casualty statement, constructed as a narrow admission, a "confession," a vaporization, and an unofficial twelve within the hour. |
| H11 | ≥5 new named objects enter the corpus | W | 87% | Confirmed — Ali Al Salem, Al-Udeiri, Muwaffaq Salti, Aqaba/King Hussein airport, the Bonji desalination plant, Darkhovin, the KTK terminal at Novorossiysk. Well past five. |
| H12 | Diplomacy surfaces only mediated, multi-version, contested | W | 83% | Confirmed — Qatar, Turkey and Iraq conducting actual shuttle diplomacy while Deputy FM Alimov floated Russian mediation to Izvestia and TASS twice ran a marginal Turkish party's anti-American bloc proposal. No shared off-ramp. |
Summary: 10 confirmed, 1 partial, 1 refuted (~96% directionally correct, ~83% clean confirmations). The structural EW readings held without exception for the fourth consecutive cycle, which is starting to tell us something uncomfortable: they may be too easy. The instructive result is H5, our cleanest refutation in weeks. We had held the depersonalized-succession prediction at 82% since March on the strength of a long unbroken run, and treated its stability as evidence rather than as inertia. A pattern that has held for 140 days is exactly the pattern whose break we will price too low. Today we retire that prediction and replace it with its inverse — now that the new Leader has an authenticated public register, we predict how the ecosystems use it.
Today's predictions
Review window: editorials published by ~22:00 UTC, July 20, 2026.
H1 (86%) [Type E]: The CENTCOM-casualty statement stays a laddered amplification object — a narrow official admission is re-rendered as "confession" by Iranian state outlets and inflated to an unsourced higher figure by Russian channels within the same cycle. #590 logged the full chain: Fars "confession," Mehr "the terrorist organization CENTCOM confesses," Intel Slava "vaporized," Boris Rozhin "unofficially 12." Confirmation is ≥1 official casualty or damage statement re-rendered in confession/admission vocabulary co-present with ≥1 unsourced numeric escalation. Refutation is the figure stabilizing at the official count across ecosystems, or the story dropping out. We are measuring how a number travels, not what the number is.
H2 (85%) [Type E]: The host-nation threshold holds — Gulf and Jordanian governments continue answering strikes on their territory exclusively in interception and civil-damage language, and none announces joining the offensive. Across #589 and #590, Kuwait confirmed engaging drones and later its own desalination plant struck, Bahrain claimed interceptions, Jordan stated three of four intercepted and summoned Iran's chargé d'affaires. Confirmation is ≥1 host-nation self-account of a strike framed defensively or as civilian-infrastructure damage. Refutation is a host announcing offensive participation, which our instrument would flag as the dominant event. Follow Strike Operations & Targets.
H3 (84%) [Type EW]: The Israeli re-entry construction continues to be assembled from Israeli estimates of Iranian intent rather than from Iranian statements. #590 recorded Katz's unconditional-retaliation pre-commitment, the security establishment's briefing that Iran is preparing to return to war, and Haaretz on Netanyahu awaiting a green light — with no Iranian declaration of intent in the window. Confirmation is ≥1 further Israeli-sourced assessment of Iranian intent circulating without a corresponding Iranian statement. Refutation is an explicit Iranian declaration of intent to strike Israel entering the corpus, which would change the object from a construction to a claim. Estimates of adversary intent leaked to domestic press predict the leaker's planning better than the adversary's.
H4 (83%) [Type E]: The Mojtaba register, now open, gets used asymmetrically — his 1979-vocabulary statements are amplified by Chinese, Russian and resistance-axis outlets as evidence of resolve, and read in Israeli and US-hawkish reflections as evidence of a closed diplomatic track. This replaces the retired depersonalized-succession prediction. #589 recorded "Great Satan" carried by Xinhua, Al-Manar and Guancha. Confirmation is ≥2 ecosystems carrying the same Mojtaba utterance with opposite significance attached. Refutation is his return to silence for a full cycle, or convergence on a single reading. We read the uses of the voice, not the intentions behind it.
H5 (83%) [Type E]: Both navies keep asserting authorship of the same maritime events — CENTCOM blockade accounting and IRGC Navy interdiction accounting describing overlapping hulls as proof of their own writ, with no reconciliation. #590 set six redirected and one disabled against four ignoring warnings, two "accidents," two turning back. Confirmation is ≥2 mutually exclusive maritime-authority accounts co-present in the window. Refutation is convergence, or a third-party verification entering the corpus. What we can observe is the contested condition, not which navy's writ runs. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.
H6 (82%) [Type EW]: The infrastructure ledger stays double-entered — desalination, power and pumping strikes read as coercion in one ecosystem and atrocity in the other, with no source holding both. #590 put Kuwait's twice-struck water plant and Iran's Bonji plant and five struck Hormozgan bridges in the same window, with Haaretz casting Iranian infrastructure strikes as threatening the region's water and Tehran Times calling the campaign a war on everyday people. Confirmation is the same target category carried in incompatible moral registers by ≥2 ecosystems. Refutation is a source holding both ledgers, or a neutral body naming belligerents specifically. The IFRC's unnamed-belligerent statement is the current ceiling on neutrality.
H7 (88%) [Type EW]: American and Western utterances reach our corpus only through adversary and bystander mirrors. Across both editorials this was near-total: Trump's reaction arrived via aggregators citing NewsNation, the WSJ influence-campaign and airframe-damage stories via Telegram relay, the DOE inventory series via a Russian-aligned channel. Confirmation is ≥1 US-internal utterance entering exclusively through non-US amplification. Refutation is a US story reaching us first-party, which our instrument would flag as an anomaly. The verdict is read from the relay chain, not the content.
H8 (85%) [Type EW]: The casualty partition holds and no neutral tally consolidates it — Iranian, Lebanese, Gaza and US-service-member tolls each circulate inside the ecosystem they indict, and any cross-cutting humanitarian statement travels poorly. #590 recorded Iran's 517 injured and 50+ killed released as an X post, Lebanon's 4,328, Gaza's 1,168, and an IFRC statement that named no belligerent and was carried by almost no one. Confirmation is ≥2 tolls dominant in separate feeds and muted elsewhere. Refutation is a shared accounting entering the corpus. Whose dead get counted maps allegiance more precisely than any statement.
H9 (81%) [Type E]: Published quantitative series continue to lose the attention contest to rhetorical contradiction — an inventory, transit or price series enters the corpus and draws less amplification than a contested official claim about it. #590 is the model: an SPR figure at its lowest since 1983 drew nearly nothing while IRNA built a story around the Energy Secretary's "contradictory account." Confirmation is ≥1 hard series present but under-amplified relative to a claim dispute in the same window. Refutation is a data series becoming the carrier object of a news cycle. We are measuring what the ecosystems choose to argue about.
H10 (80%) [Type E]: The influence-operations meta-story keeps running asymmetrically — accusations of manufactured information space are directed outward and never turned inward on the accusing ecosystem's own operations. #589 caught the WSJ $50 million report seized across ecosystem lines and met by AbuAliExpress with "well done, they should double it, everyone does this," while Iran's own rumor-control apparatus rapidly denied explosions in three cities. Confirmation is ≥1 information-manipulation accusation co-present with unexamined manipulation by the accusing ecosystem. Refutation is any ecosystem applying the frame reflexively to itself. Follow Global South & Middle Powers.
H11 (86%) [Type W]: At least five new named military, maritime, infrastructure, financial or casualty objects enter the editorial corpus. Ali Al Salem, Al-Udeiri, Aqaba, Bonji, Darkhovin and the KTK terminal entered in the last two windows alone; the widening Gulf-littoral frame and the infrastructure ledger keep object density well above baseline. Confirmation is a tally from the next published editorials. Refutation is a structurally quiet window far below recent naming density. The verdict is read from what the ecosystem names, not from what occurs.
H12 (82%) [Type W]: The mediation track stays crowded and non-exclusive — multiple states are described as mediating simultaneously, with at least one mediation claim entering through a state wire or a deniable proxy rather than a first-party readout. #590 recorded Qatar, Turkey and Iraq conducting shuttle diplomacy while Deputy FM Alimov floated Russian mediation to Izvestia, and TASS twice ran a marginal Turkish party's four-power bloc proposal — placement, not reporting. Confirmation is ≥2 competing mediation claims co-present with ≥1 arriving via wire or proxy. Refutation is a single agreed mediator or a clean first-party readout. Follow Negotiations & Ceasefire Diplomacy.
What we can't see
By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — NYT, WSJ, CNN, Fox, Bloomberg, Reuters, CENTCOM — and these windows were mirror-thick even by our standards: the American casualty statements, Trump's reaction, the $50 million influence-campaign report and the DOE inventory series all reached us through relays with a stake in how they landed, with the US domestic register almost entirely absent. Iran's information environment still reaches us through state-curated channels degraded by the long internet blackout, biasing our corpus toward sources with the infrastructure to circumvent it and muting whatever sits beneath the "sacred unity" saturation — the executions and the three hundred opened files we log are themselves evidence of how much is not reaching us. Three blind spots are acute this cycle: we cannot adjudicate the Aqaba debris event, where an ambiguous impact is being built into a casus belli by one party's press using that party's own intelligence estimates; we cannot verify either navy's account of the same hulls in Hormuz, so the maritime ledger remains a contest of claims we can map but not resolve; and our Telegram corpus skews ~65% Russian, a corpus that in this window was actively manufacturing a casualty figure six times the sourced one and running a marginal party's proposal as if it were a position.
