This page predicts what stories will be told, not what will happen. We observe media ecosystems — not the war, not the oil market, not the negotiations. When a prediction says "oil above $95," it is testing whether the information conditions sustaining that price floor remain intact in our corpus, not offering a commodity call. When it says "Gulf framing fractures," it is predicting how editors and state media will behave, not how governments will act.
Type E predictions are about ecosystem behavior we directly observe: who amplifies whom, which narratives gain traction, what editorial patterns emerge. Type EW predictions are about how real events get differentially constructed across ecosystems. Type W predictions are about the world — our weakest category, because we see events only through the mirrors our sources hold up. The scored track record below is a measure of how well we read those mirrors, not a measure of privileged insight into the world they reflect.
The Daily Forecast
Iran Strikes Monitor — July 21, 2026
Day 144 of the US-Israeli air campaign against Iran. Hours 3411–3435 since first strikes at ~06:10 UTC, February 28.
This forecast covers editorials #591 through #592, published between 10:00 and 22:00 UTC yesterday. It scores the previous forecast's twelve predictions against what our editorial corpus actually recorded, then offers twelve new predictions for the next 24 hours.
How this works
This observatory monitors the information environment around the US-Israeli strikes on Iran — not the war itself. We track 55 web sources and ~50 Telegram channels spanning Chinese, Russian, Iranian, Israeli, Arab, Turkish, and Global South ecosystems. Twice daily a panel of seven simulated analysts produces an editorial meta-analysis, and each cycle we publish falsifiable predictions and score them transparently. Predictions are typed: Type E (ecosystem behavior we observe directly), Type W (world events visible only through ecosystem reflections), and Type EW (how one real-world event is differentially constructed across ecosystems).
These predictions are about what stories will be told, not what will happen. When we name an oil figure, an insurance rate, a transit count or a casualty tally, we are testing whether the information conditions that keep that object visible and contested in our corpus hold — not offering a verification, a trading signal, or an intelligence estimate. By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — NYT, WSJ, CNN, CBS, Reuters, CENTCOM — they reach us only as reflected, amplified, and reframed by the ecosystems we study, often several mirrors deep. About our methodology.
Where we are
The Gulf hosting states stopped being scenery. For most of this campaign, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar appeared in our corpus as place names attached to other actors' claims. #592 recorded them acquiring a speaking voice, and the register is documentary rather than rhetorical: Bahrain's civil aviation authority stating its air navigation equipment was targeted while operations continued, Kuwait's foreign ministry reserving "the legitimate right to take all necessary measures," Qatar filing a letter with the UN Security Council itemising a tanker strike on 7 July, a ballistic attack on 12 July, and three injuries including a child. This is paperwork, and paperwork is behaviour that costs something. What none of those statements mentions is the American forces on their soil as a factor in why they are being struck — an omission doing as much work as the condemnations. Follow Strike Operations & Targets.
A withheld number became an admitted number, and arrived pre-framed. #591 logged NYT reporting, via Iranian and Russian relays, that the Pentagon was withholding injury figures. #592 recorded the concession hours later: a Pentagon spokesman conceding roughly one hundred wounded since 7 July, with "96 percent returned to duty" and "mostly mild concussions" attached in the same breath. CBS, carried by Al Mayadeen and Press TV, transmitted the hundred without the mitigation. The figure is now shared across every ecosystem in our corpus. Only the framing is contested, and the framing is the more durable fight.
Iran began exporting satellite imagery, and the chain is fully observable. Fars published high-resolution imagery of Muwaffaq Salti; Fotros packaged a damage inventory; Middle East Spectator forwarded; IntelSlava Englished it; CIG and Boris Rozhin supplied technical verdicts on Iranian missile accuracy. No node in that chain has independent access to the base. One counter-example is worth logging: Middle East Spectator publicly retracted its own report of Iranian forces massing near Kuwait, stating the footage was old. Visible self-correction inside an aggregator is rare enough to be diagnostic.
Announcements are being priced before they are enforced. The Yemeni armed forces' "blockade for blockade" declaration against Saudi shipping propagated across every ecosystem within minutes and was converted into an insurance rate — Reuters via Al Mayadeen — on the declaration alone. Alongside it: Hormuz flow reported at about four million barrels a day against fifteen in late June, nine transits counted in twenty-four hours, Air France suspending Riyadh and Dubai, Brent crossing $90 and easing again the moment mediator contacts were confirmed. Price is tracking diplomatic signalling more tightly than barrels. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.
Yesterday's scorecard
We score the previous forecast's twelve predictions against #591 and #592.
| # | Prediction | Type | P | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | Casualty statement stays a laddered amplification object | E | 86% | Confirmed — the Pentagon's ~100-wounded concession arrived with mitigation attached and was stripped of it by CBS-via-Al Mayadeen/Press TV; Middle East Spectator individuated two named soldiers, CIG appended an editorial line about who sent them, IntelSlava and Press TV carried it onward. The ladder ran, though this cycle it climbed toward naming rather than toward an inflated number. |
| H2 | Host-nation threshold holds; defensive language only | E | 85% | Confirmed — Bahrain acknowledged targeted navigation equipment and broadcast shelter warnings, Kuwait condemned and reserved rights, Qatar filed at the Security Council. No host announced offensive participation. The register shifted from interception to legal filing, which is a change in kind we did not specify. |
| H3 | Israeli re-entry construction built from Israeli intent-estimates | EW | 84% | Refuted — the construction did not recur in either window. Israel appears in #591 mainly through AbuAliExpress relaying a Hamas statement into Hebrew and through domestic reaction to a football match, and in #592 through Jerusalem Post framing Kuwaiti suffering. The object we predicted simply left the corpus. |
| H4 | Mojtaba register used asymmetrically across ecosystems | E | 83% | Refuted — no Mojtaba utterance appears in either window. The new Leader returned to silence for a full cycle, which is the refutation condition we ourselves specified. We overcorrected from H5's break last cycle. |
| H5 | Both navies assert authorship of the same maritime events | E | 83% | Partial — the IRGC claimed two southern-route tankers halted and UKMTO reported a vessel struck off Kumzar, but no co-present CENTCOM blockade accounting of the same hulls appeared. The contested condition held; the specific two-navy symmetry did not. |
| H6 | Infrastructure ledger stays double-entered | EW | 82% | Confirmed — Iranian provincial damage arithmetic (110 impacts and 420,000 billion rials in Khuzestan, Bushehr's destroyed terminal, Chehel Sotoun's buckled columns) against Rybar MENA on Kuwait's power sector and Jerusalem Post framing Kuwaiti suffering as an Iranian pressure instrument. Al Jazeera English's civilian-site explainer came closest to holding both ledgers. |
| H7 | Western utterances reach us only through mirrors | EW | 88% | Confirmed — NYT, CBS, CNN, Reuters, AP, Economist polling and the Pentagon briefing all entered exclusively through ISNA, Al Mayadeen, TASS, Fotros, Solovievlive and Press TV. Near-total again. |
| H8 | Casualty partition holds; no neutral tally | EW | 85% | Confirmed — American wounded circulated in the ecosystems that indict Washington, Iranian provincial figures stayed provincial, and nine nights in #591 recorded no cumulative Iranian toll from any source. The IFRC's Geneva Conventions statement was amplified almost exclusively inside the Iranian ecosystem. |
| H9 | Hard series under-amplified relative to claim disputes | E | 81% | Partial — Hormuz flow at ~4m bpd, nine MarineTraffic transits and Khuzestan's rial figure were present but low-traffic, consistent with the prediction. Against it, Brent crossing $90 and the insurance-rate move were themselves carrier objects across multiple ecosystems. Series lost the attention contest in some cases and won it in others. |
| H10 | Influence-ops accusations run outward only | E | 80% | Too early — no information-manipulation accusation of the kind we specified appears in either window. The nearest adjacent item is Middle East Spectator retracting its own sourcing, which is reflexivity without accusation. We cannot score what did not enter the corpus. |
| H11 | ≥5 new named objects enter the corpus | W | 86% | Confirmed — Muwaffaq Salti, Azraq, Ali Al Salem, Sirik, Mirjaveh, Kumzar, the Bonji Jask desalination plant, the Al-Rekayyat tanker, the Alana valley, Chehel Sotoun, the CPC Black Sea terminal. Far past five. |
| H12 | Mediation track crowded, non-exclusive, wire-mediated | W | 82% | Confirmed — Reuters via Fotros and Solovievlive on a ten-day ceasefire proposal, TRT World on a Pakistan-Qatar plan to restore pre-9 July positions, Baqaei confirming receipt without detail, and Moscow's standing mediator offer. Multiple simultaneous mediators, at least two arriving by wire relay. |
Summary: 7 confirmed, 2 partial, 2 refuted, 1 too early (~75% directionally correct, ~58% clean confirmations). Our worst cycle in weeks, and the reason is instructive. Both refutations — H3 and H4 — failed the same way: we predicted the continuation of an object rather than a behaviour, and the object left the window. Israeli intent-estimates and Mojtaba's voice did not get contradicted; they got dropped. H10 failed identically and we are scoring it honestly as unscoreable rather than quietly calling it partial. The predictions that held (H2, H6, H7, H8, H11, H12) all name a structural relation that survives whatever the news happens to be that day. The lesson we are applying below: a prediction that requires a specific actor to speak is a bet on the news cycle, not a reading of the instrument.
Today's predictions
Review window: editorials published by ~22:00 UTC, July 21, 2026.
H1 (87%) [Type E]: The Gulf hosting states continue building a documentary record — at least one further legal, procedural or civil-authority statement from Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar or Saudi Arabia enters the corpus, and none of them names the American presence on their territory as a cause. #592 recorded the shift from location-name to speaking party: a UNSC filing, a civil aviation acknowledgment, a reservation of rights. Confirmation is ≥1 host-state statement in legal or civil-defence register. Refutation is a host state publicly connecting the strikes to the US basing arrangement, or a full quiet cycle. We are reading the register these states choose, not adjudicating their grievance.
H2 (85%) [Type EW]: The one-hundred-wounded figure stays shared across ecosystems while its framing stays contested — the mitigation clause travels in some relays and is stripped in others. #592 logged the Pentagon's concession with "96 percent returned to duty" attached and CBS-via-Al Mayadeen carrying the number bare. Confirmation is the same figure appearing in ≥2 ecosystems with materially different surrounding framing. Refutation is convergence on one framing, or the figure being superseded by a new official count that resets the object. Once a number is common property, the fight moves to what sits beside it.
H3 (84%) [Type E]: The Iranian imagery-export chain runs again — satellite or high-resolution damage material originating in Iranian state media propagates through the Russian-language aggregator layer and acquires technical assessment from channels with no independent access. #592 traced Fars → Fotros → Middle East Spectator → IntelSlava → CIG → Boris Rozhin on Muwaffaq Salti. Confirmation is ≥1 imagery object traversing ≥3 nodes with assessment attached downstream. Refutation is imagery entering with independent verification, or the chain not running. We can observe the chain precisely; we cannot observe the imagery's provenance.
H4 (83%) [Type EW]: Iranian civilian damage continues to be published as provincial arithmetic while Gulf civilian damage is narrated by third parties — neither ecosystem reports the other's, and no source holds both ledgers. #592 put Khuzestan's 110 impacts and 420,000 billion rials, Bushehr's terminal and Isfahan's palace-museum against Rybar MENA on Kuwait's grid and Jerusalem Post on Kuwaiti suffering as an Iranian instrument. Confirmation is the same target category carried in incompatible registers by ≥2 ecosystems. Refutation is a single source publishing both ledgers, or a neutral body naming belligerents specifically. Al Jazeera English's legal explainer is the current ceiling on that.
H5 (86%) [Type EW]: Western and American utterances reach our corpus only through adversary and bystander mirrors. Across both windows this was again near-total: NYT, CBS, CNN, AP, Reuters, Economist polling and the Pentagon briefing all arrived via ISNA, Al Mayadeen, TASS, Fotros, Solovievlive. Confirmation is ≥1 US-internal utterance entering exclusively through non-US amplification. Refutation is a US story reaching us first-party, which our instrument would flag as an anomaly. The verdict is read from the relay chain, not the content.
H6 (82%) [Type E]: A declaration or announcement with no demonstrated enforcement gets converted into a price, a premium or a route change inside the same cycle. #592 is the model: the Yemeni "blockade for blockade" statement moved Red Sea insurance rates on the declaration alone, and Brent eased on confirmation of mediator contacts rather than on any barrel. Confirmation is ≥1 announced-but-unverified action co-present with a reported commercial or pricing response. Refutation is a cycle in which commercial indicators track only observed physical events. We are testing whether the market is still pricing narrative.
H7 (81%) [Type E]: The mediation track stays crowded and non-exclusive, with at least one proposal arriving through a wire relay or third state rather than a first-party readout, and no exclusive mediator emerging. #592 carried a ten-day ceasefire proposal via Reuters→Fotros/Solovievlive, a Pakistan-Qatar plan via TRT World, and Baqaei confirming receipt while withholding detail. Confirmation is ≥2 competing mediation claims co-present with ≥1 arriving by relay. Refutation is a single named mediator or a clean first-party readout from either belligerent. Follow Negotiations & Ceasefire Diplomacy.
H8 (80%) [Type E]: Diplomacy and strikes stay on the same clock, and each side's ecosystem reads the other's diplomatic signal as cover. #592 put CENTCOM's fresh strike round, Trump's "many times over" post and IRGC waves 21–23 in the same hours as three separate ceasefire proposals, with Qalibaf's framing — Americans moving equipment in while claiming to want an end — travelling into Al Mayadeen, Solovievlive and Guancha. Confirmation is ≥1 explicit reading of the adversary's diplomacy as cover, co-present with active operations. Refutation is a pause in operations during a diplomatic window, which our instrument would flag immediately.
H9 (79%) [Type E]: The Iranian state's sectarian and internal-security messaging continues to run ahead of events rather than behind them — unity or infiltration content appears without a triggering incident, or attribution for an incident precedes any investigation. #591 recorded the Mirjaveh assassination attributed to "Zionist-American agents" within hours, with IRNA unity pieces already published that morning. Confirmation is ≥1 pre-positioned unity/infiltration item or an attribution issued faster than an investigation could conclude. Refutation is attribution following a stated investigative process. Sequencing tells us where the system feels least secure, without telling us who did anything.
H10 (76%) [Type EW]: The Minab schoolchildren continue moving through institutional and cultural channels — memorial, festival, diplomatic or legal invocations — while the forensic and procedural details of the same event travel poorly. #592 recorded the culture minister presenting SCO counterparts with a book of the children's photographs and an actress dedicating a prize to them, while Fars's note that identities were confirmed by DNA moved without amplification. Confirmation is ≥1 institutional or cultural invocation co-present with under-amplified procedural detail. Refutation is the forensic material becoming the carrier object, or the thread going quiet. Follow Global South & Middle Powers.
H11 (85%) [Type W]: At least five new named military, maritime, infrastructure, financial or casualty objects enter the editorial corpus. The last two windows produced Muwaffaq Salti, Azraq, Sirik, Mirjaveh, Kumzar, the Al-Rekayyat, Bonji Jask, the Alana valley, Chehel Sotoun and the CPC terminal. The widening Gulf-littoral frame and the provincial damage ledger keep naming density well above baseline. Confirmation is a tally from the next published editorials. Refutation is a structurally quiet window far below recent density. The verdict is read from what the ecosystems name, not from what occurs.
H12 (74%) [Type W]: Hormuz and Red Sea traffic indicators stay contested and partial — transit counts, flow estimates and insurance rates enter our corpus from at least two mutually uncorroborating sources, with no consolidated figure. #592 carried CIG at ~4m bpd against 15m in late June and Al Jazeera Arabic citing MarineTraffic at nine transits in twenty-four hours, alongside Red Sea premiums moving on a declaration. Confirmation is ≥2 traffic or flow figures co-present without reconciliation. Refutation is a single authoritative series being adopted across ecosystems. We are testing whether the strait remains an information contest, not measuring the strait.
What we can't see
By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — NYT, WSJ, CNN, CBS, AP, Reuters, CENTCOM — and both windows were mirror-thick even by our standards: the Pentagon's casualty concession, the Economist polling, the ten-day ceasefire proposal and the American self-criticism about transparency all reached us through relays with a stake in how they landed. Iran's information environment still reaches us through state-curated channels degraded by the long internet blackout, which biases our corpus toward sources with the infrastructure to circumvent it and mutes whatever sits beneath the unity saturation — nine nights into this phase, no source in #591 offered any cumulative Iranian casualty figure, and that absence is itself data about what is not reaching us. Three blind spots are acute this cycle: we cannot verify a single frame of the satellite imagery now driving the battle-damage narrative, and the entire assessment chain around it consists of parties with no independent access; we cannot adjudicate the Mirjaveh assassination, where attribution arrived before investigation and where the Baluch and Kurdish accounts reach Persian-language readers only in one moral vocabulary; and our Telegram corpus remains ~65% Russian-aligned at a moment when that ecosystem is simultaneously the principal relay for American casualty reporting and the principal amplifier of Iranian damage claims.
Check back tomorrow. We'll score every prediction above against the editorial record and tell you exactly where we were right, where we were wrong, and what the misses reveal.
