This page predicts what stories will be told, not what will happen. We observe media ecosystems — not the war, not the oil market, not the negotiations. When a prediction says "oil above $95," it is testing whether the information conditions sustaining that price floor remain intact in our corpus, not offering a commodity call. When it says "Gulf framing fractures," it is predicting how editors and state media will behave, not how governments will act.
Type E predictions are about ecosystem behavior we directly observe: who amplifies whom, which narratives gain traction, what editorial patterns emerge. Type EW predictions are about how real events get differentially constructed across ecosystems. Type W predictions are about the world — our weakest category, because we see events only through the mirrors our sources hold up. The scored track record below is a measure of how well we read those mirrors, not a measure of privileged insight into the world they reflect.
The Daily Forecast
Iran Strikes Monitor — September 29, 2026
Day 214 of the US-Israeli air campaign against Iran. Hours 5091–5115 since first strikes at ~06:10 UTC, February 28.
This forecast covers editorials #677 through #678, published between 10:00 and 22:00 UTC on September 28. It scores yesterday's predictions against what our editorial corpus actually recorded, then offers new predictions for the next 24 hours.
How this works
This observatory monitors the information environment around the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, not the war itself. We track 55 web sources and roughly 50 Telegram channels spanning Chinese, Russian, Iranian, Israeli, Arab, Turkish and Global South ecosystems. A panel of seven simulated analysts produces an editorial meta-analysis twice daily, and each cycle we publish falsifiable predictions and score them in public. Predictions are typed: Type E (ecosystem behaviour we observe directly), Type W (world events visible only through ecosystem reflections), and Type EW (how one real-world event is differentially constructed across ecosystems).
These predictions are about what stories will be told, not what will happen. When we name a barrel figure, a reserve level, a hull designation or a casualty total, we are testing whether the information conditions that keep that object visible and contested in our corpus hold — not offering a verification, a trading signal or an intelligence estimate. By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly — AP, Reuters, WSJ, Axios, NBC, CNN, Bloomberg, Politico, Economist, Telegraph, AFP. They reach us only as reflected, amplified and reframed by the ecosystems we study, often several mirrors deep. About our methodology.
Where we are
Hormuz is no longer a dispute about events. It is a dispute about a condition, and the sharpest fracture now runs inside one ecosystem. In #678, a message attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei said Iran's forces "protect" the strait; Rear Admiral Sayyari said flatly that it is closed and that the enemy merely chants that it is open; Al Mayadeen's correspondent, broadcasting from Hormuz Island, described ships piling up and transit halted, then added that island life was normal and the school year had started routinely. CENTCOM answered the IRGC's "full control" claim with numbers — no navy, over a billion barrels transited — and the rebuttal travelled through AJA News, Al Arabiya, Al Hadath and Anadolu, while Mehr headlined "CENTCOM's strange lie." Al Jazeera Arabic did the thing observatories notice: it converted the argument into a standing headline question, "Who controls Hormuz?", and ran it twice. Follow Strait of Hormuz & Oil.
One state outlet pinned a denial and pinned its opposite four hours later. Iraq's ambassador in Tehran said Najaf would reopen to Iranian flights within 24 hours; Iran's civil aviation authority denied it and Mehr pinned the denial; by late afternoon Mehr had pinned Iraqi Airways resuming, confirmed by ISNA, Radio Farda and Anadolu. Reuters, reaching us via L'Orient Today, reported that Washington had not finished deciding the sanctions waiver that would make either version true. Two ecosystems argued over a fact a third party had not settled. Around that argument, Iranian and resistance-aligned media built a sovereignty frame — protests at Najaf, Karbala, Nasiriyah and Maysan, a Nujaba sit-in call, and Kataib Hezbollah's ultimatum to close the crossings of blockade participants if the air embargo holds past 1 October. No Iraqi voice in our corpus defended the Treasury circular. Follow Regional Focus: Iraq.
Both principals spent the window confirming a process and denying its substance. Mediators resumed separate talks; Araghchi met Qatari mediators with no American present and said an answer would be conveyed; a US official told Al Jazeera the discussions were positive but there is no deal without the nuclear file; Axios and CNN reported Trump ready to trade sanctions relief and unfrozen assets; Trump then denied offering anything and demanded a retraction, while confirming his team held indirect talks that day. On the Iranian side, Tasnim's source said no agreement to negotiate exists and a Press TV source called reports of nuclear flexibility false. Parliament raised the entry price in parallel: Moqtadai saying Hormuz rather than the nuclear file is now the core, and a three-urgency NPT withdrawal bill in play the same day Araghchi told NBC that 60% enrichment is peaceful and the NPT intact. Follow Negotiations & Ceasefire Diplomacy.
And in #677 we watched a claim's full inflation cycle inside a single day. An NBC report of eight US Marines injured by an anti-ship cruise missile on 14 September crossed nine channels in roughly ninety minutes essentially unedited — each ecosystem could use the raw fact for its own incompatible purpose, so nobody needed to reframe it. Twelve hours later the resistance aggregator Fotros had the Pentagon adding 37 US casualties, sourced to unnamed "Israeli military sources." Eight, attributed to a named network and three officials; thirty-seven, attributed to nobody, travelling on the smaller figure's credibility.
Yesterday's scorecard
Both scored editorials were published after yesterday's forecast, with the standard one-hour window overlap. Sixth consecutive uncontaminated scoring set.
| # | Prediction | Type | P | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H1 | Hormuz argument carried by verification instruments, ≥1 ecosystem citing the market as arbiter | E | 84% | Confirmed. CENTCOM's billion-barrels count, Mehr's 70-million-barrel export figure and 10% Kharg increase, Reuters on regional exports at a wartime high, US DOE strategic reserves at 283.8 million barrels — the lowest since October 1982 — carried by Mehr, UK diesel at 199.18p, Dutch petrol at €2.73, Brent at $108 then $105, Fars claiming physical cargoes at $125. Mehr explicitly framed CENTCOM's statement as aimed at Americans angry about fuel prices, and an IRNA analyst used tanker traffic against Trump's claims. |
| H2 | Cordon enumerated through commercial intermediaries while its authorizing text stays outside our corpus | E | 86% | Confirmed, eighth consecutive window. The enumerated unit moved again — from ground handlers to a pending sanctions waiver, a pilgrimage carve-out, a named carrier resuming, and border crossings named as retaliation targets. No outlet published, quoted or linked the Treasury circular; it was referenced as an object by both sides and by neither in text. |
| H3 | Baghdad's non-position reported as such; resumption announced by Iranian outlets before Iraqi confirmation | E | 76% | Partial. The first limb held — factional, clerical and street mobilisation continued, the four presidencies stayed on adjacent ground, and no binding Iraqi instrument entered our corpus. The second limb inverted: the resumption claim came from a named Iraqi institution, Iraq's ambassador in Tehran, and the denial came from Iran's own aviation authority and Mehr. We predicted the right mechanism pointing the wrong way. |
| H4 | Captured-platform file gains technical detail while its identity stays unsettled | E | 74% | Partial. Two incompatible designations from one IRGC statement — a Remus 600 via Press TV, a Mk 18 Mod 2 Kingfish via Almasirah — carried without correction anywhere, plus a US denial reaching The Jerusalem Post and Al Jazeera English. But no further capability or exploitation detail accumulated, and the file left the corpus entirely by #678. This was exactly the object-persistence form we announced we were retiring, and we ran it anyway. |
| H5 | Borrowed adversary authority load-bearing in ≥3 ecosystems, once through two or more mirrors | E | 80% | Confirmed, heavily. SolovievLive on WSJ munitions replenishment, the EU's own foreign policy chief carried by Al Jazeera Arabic on the Aspides shortfall, IRNA citing the San Diego Union-Tribune on a carrier sailing, Bloomberg via Al Mayadeen on Qatari LNG, Politico via ISNA, IRNA relaying Responsible Statecraft against the "precision strikes" frame, the US Department of Energy's reserve figure via Mehr, and Press TV running a frame-analysis of two Economist covers. Multi-mirror citation was the norm, not the exception. |
| H6 | Fairford file stays narrated by non-British ecosystems, British carriage procedural | E | 70% | Confirmed, with a bonus. Al Arabiya moved from "suspicions around Iran" to "Tehran denies" in roughly five hours as UK police confirmed the five detainees were British nationals from London — the British contribution was detainee nationality, and the narration stayed Gulf. It is also the cleanest instance of an ecosystem recalibrating against its own earlier attribution that we have recorded. |
| H7 | A casualty count holds steady while attribution is added, hedged or withheld by ecosystem | E W | 78% | Partial. The steady-count limb held on the NBC Marine figure, which crossed nine channels unedited. But what varied there was purpose, not attribution. Where attribution did vary — the Al-Rawd school struck a third time, the Yemen tolls — the counts did not hold steady; the Gulf sample carried a different arithmetic altogether (356 operations, 476 Houthis killed or wounded) against the Ansarallah count of 1,123 strikes. Two mechanisms, neither the one we specified. |
| H8 | Countable object at ≥3 incompatible magnitudes, ≥1 named outlet prosecutes the gap | EW | 76% | Confirmed twice. On Hormuz: "full control," "no navy and a billion barrels," "closed," "ships piling up but school started normally," "protect" — with Al Jazeera Arabic converting the contradiction into a twice-run headline question and Mehr prosecuting it as a "strange lie." On the Iranian economy: a record 240,000 toman, a 189,000-point bourse jump, and Abu Ali Express computing a 15% collapse in a fortnight. Third consecutive set; this is now a standing measure. |
| H9 | A negotiation report denied by the party it describes, denial travelling as far as the report | EW | 70% | Confirmed, in both directions and unusually cleanly. Trump denied the Axios and CNN sanctions-relief reporting and demanded a retraction while confirming indirect talks the same day; Tasnim and Press TV sources killed both the negotiating agreement and the nuclear-flexibility report; and in #677 IRNA's own source pre-emptively denied a New York round, carried into BBC Persian, Naharnet, L'Orient Today and Daily Sabah. |
| H10 | Iran-origin claim gains specificity in non-Iranian carriage without gaining sourcing | EW | 72% | Partial, and the miss is informative. The inflation happened — eight Marines became 37 casualties — but inside the origin ecosystem's own aggregator tier, not at a crossing into Russian, OSINT or Israeli carriage. Where a claim did cross outward, Fars's nineteen-vessel figure into Barantchik, it travelled intact and unimproved. The mechanism has relocated upstream of the boundary we were watching, so we are moving the measurement. |
| H11 | ≥8 new named objects across ≥3 categories, incl. a new maritime or financial print | W | 86% | Confirmed, nineteenth consecutive window. 283.8 million barrels, October 1982, 199.18p, €2.73, $125 physical, 240,000 toman, 7.46 million on the bourse, 70 million barrels, eight Marines, 37 casualties, Remus 600, Mk 18 Mod 2 Kingfish, Theodore Roosevelt, a third of Tomahawk inventory, WHO's 4,481 and 838, IOM's 145,000, 2,775 educational facilities, Al-Rawd, Kamal Adwan, Pakdasht, 130 billion toman in Urmia, Bashiqa, 1 October. |
| H12 | Seven-day clock stays unstartable, mediated channels the only named route | W | 56% | Confirmed, third consecutive window. The plan stayed undated while the entry price was renegotiated in public — Hormuz displacing the nuclear file per Moqtadai, an NPT withdrawal bill at three urgencies. Doha remained the only named route and "an answer will be conveyed" the only schedule. No outlet dated the start, published an official US text, or reported the offer withdrawn. The new development is that the corpus now contains exactly one dated instrument, and a non-state actor owns it. |
Summary: 8 confirmed, 4 partial, 0 refuted, against a mean stated probability of 76%. Our first set with no refutations — and the four partials share one defect worth naming. In H3, H7 and H10 we did not merely predict that a mechanism would operate; we specified which way it would point (Iranian outlets announcing before Iraqi confirmation, attribution varying while a count held, inflation occurring at the crossing). In all three the mechanism ran, in the opposite direction or one tier upstream. Set #002's lesson was "predict divergences, not destinations"; the sharper version is that we should predict that the machinery turns, not which way it turns. H4 failed for a different and less excusable reason: it was the object-persistence form we had announced the day before that we were retiring.
Today's predictions
Review window: editorials published through ~22:00 UTC, September 29, 2026.
H1 (86%) [Type E]: Hormuz is described in mutually exclusive terms by outlets inside the same aligned bloc, and at least one outlet converts the contradiction into its subject. Yesterday produced three Iranian-aligned accounts of one waterway — protected, closed, and congested-but-normal — plus a combatant command answering with transit arithmetic. Confirmation is two or more Iranian or resistance-aligned sources giving incompatible descriptions of the strait's status within the window, with at least one named outlet in any ecosystem making the discrepancy the story rather than picking a side. Refutation is convergence on a single official description, or the contradiction passing without any outlet remarking on it. We are measuring editorial behaviour around an unresolvable claim, not the state of the strait.
H2 (86%) [Type E]: The enforcement cordon keeps being enumerated through commercial intermediaries and pending waivers while its authorizing text stays outside our corpus. Eight consecutive windows, with the reported unit now a waiver Washington has not finished deciding, a carrier resuming, a pilgrimage carve-out and named border crossings. Confirmation is further named intermediaries or exemptions refusing, complying or resuming, with no outlet publishing, quoting or linking the operative US Treasury language. Refutation is the document circulating, or a Treasury-origin item reaching us directly rather than through a belligerent-aligned relay.
H3 (78%) [Type E]: The Iraqi air-blockade file produces dated ultimatums from non-state actors while no binding Iraqi state instrument enters our corpus. Kataib Hezbollah has set 1 October, Nujaba has called a sit-in, and protests are running in four southern governorates, against four presidencies whose own statement stays on the weapons-monopoly question. Confirmation is at least one further dated deadline, ultimatum or mobilisation call from a factional or clerical actor, with Iraqi state material remaining administrative, anonymous or absent. Refutation is a cabinet decision, court ruling or aviation-authority determination entering the corpus, or the factional tier going quiet.
H4 (80%) [Type E]: A state or state-aligned outlet reverses a factual commitment without publishing a correction. Mehr pinned a denial and pinned its opposite four hours later; Al Arabiya moved from Iranian suspicion to Tehran's denial in five hours; the IRGC's own spokesman overwrote his media's platform identification the week before. Confirmation is any outlet in our corpus carrying a claim and then its contradiction inside the window, with no retraction, correction notice or acknowledgement of the earlier version. Refutation is explicit corrections being issued, or claims being hedged at first publication rather than reversed after it.
H5 (82%) [Type E]: Borrowed adversary authority is load-bearing in ≥3 ecosystems, and at least once a Western institution's own number is used against Western policy. The strongest instances yesterday were a US Department of Energy reserve figure and a WSJ munitions count travelling through Iranian and Russian carriage, and the EU's foreign policy chief describing the EU's own naval shortfall via a Gulf outlet. Confirmation is three or more ecosystems resting a claim primarily on Western reporting or Western official data they do not own, including one case where the figure's producer is the target of the argument. Refutation is ecosystems asserting in their own names, or citing Western material only as an adversary to be rebutted.
H6 (72%) [Type E]: Arithmetic from bodies with no side reaches us only through belligerent-aligned carriage. The WHO's 4,481 Yemeni casualties and 838 dead, and the IOM's 145,000 displaced, arrived through Al Jazeera and Iranian state media while the Gulf sample carried a belligerent's own tally instead. Confirmation is at least one figure from a neutral or multilateral body — WHO, IOM, UNESCO, IAEA, ICRC — appearing in our corpus exclusively via belligerents or their allies, with no direct or independent carriage. Refutation is direct carriage of such a figure, or a neutral figure crossing into an ecosystem that has no use for it.
H7 (78%) [Type EW]: Two figures in tension are published hours apart by the same ecosystem, and the pairing is performed only from outside it. Iranian state media ran "by divine calculations, Iran is the first power of the world," a record 240,000 toman and a 189,000-point bourse jump across the same wires, and nobody inside that ecosystem put any two of them in one sentence; an Israeli OSINT channel did. Confirmation is two co-published figures or claims from one ecosystem that cut against each other, with the juxtaposition made explicit only by an outlet in a different ecosystem. Refutation is an outlet reconciling its own numbers, or the contradiction going unremarked everywhere.
H8 (78%) [Type EW]: A countable object arrives at ≥3 incompatible magnitudes and at least one named outlet makes the discrepancy its subject. Confirmed three sets running, on throughput, casualties, the strait and the rial. Confirmation requires both limbs: a countable object — transits, barrels, prices, casualties, flights, operations — carried at three or more mutually inconsistent magnitudes, and a named outlet whose story is the gap rather than one of the figures. Refutation is three magnitudes circulating with nobody prosecuting the contradiction.
H9 (74%) [Type EW]: A party confirms a negotiating process and denies its substance within the same window, with the denial travelling into ≥2 ecosystems. Trump demanded a retraction of the sanctions-relief reporting while confirming indirect talks the same day; Tasnim denied any agreement to negotiate while Araghchi described conveying an answer through Doha. Confirmation is either principal, or a mediator, simultaneously acknowledging contact and rejecting a reported term, with the rejection carried by at least two ecosystems. Refutation is a substantive confirmation of terms by either side, or denials staying inside their origin ecosystem.
H10 (70%) [Type EW]: A sourced figure acquires an unsourced multiplier inside its own aligned aggregator tier before it crosses ecosystem boundaries. This is the relocated form of yesterday's partial: eight Marines from a named network and three officials became 37 casualties attributed to nobody, within twelve hours and without leaving the aligned bloc. Confirmation is a figure first carried with named attribution reappearing at a materially larger magnitude in aggregator or channel carriage aligned with the same side, attributed to unnamed sources. Refutation is inflation occurring only at ecosystem crossings, or sourced figures travelling with their magnitude intact.
H11 (86%) [Type W]: At least eight new named objects enter the corpus across ≥3 categories, including a new maritime, energy or financial print. Nineteen consecutive windows above threshold. Confirmation is a tally from the next published editorials, with the transit-price-reserve-volume category producing at least one magnitude not already in circulation — a fresh benchmark, spread, stockpile level or retail print rather than a recycled one. Refutation is a structurally quiet window, or energy and maritime reporting that only repeats yesterday's numbers.
H12 (58%) [Type W]: The only dated instrument in the corpus remains a non-state ultimatum, while every state-level clock stays undated. The seven-day plan is still articulated down to day six and day seven without a start date; the sanctions waiver is still being decided; the Iranian answer is still to be conveyed. Against that, Kataib Hezbollah owns 1 October. Confirmation is that deadline being met, extended, elapsed or restated while no official text from Washington or Tehran acquires a date. Refutation is a dated official instrument entering the corpus, or the non-state deadline being withdrawn and nothing replacing it. We price this low because a single dated statement from either capital ends it.
What we can't see
By design we do not monitor Western mass media directly: the NBC casualty report, the Axios and CNN sanctions-relief reporting, the Reuters waiver story, the Bloomberg LNG extension and the US Department of Energy reserve figure all reached us through belligerent-aligned intermediaries, each keeping a different half. Iran's information environment arrives through channels curated by the long internet blackout, biasing toward sources with the infrastructure to circumvent it. Three blind spots are acute today. We hold no maritime, insurance, port or hydrographic layer, which is why five mutually exclusive descriptions of one waterway coexisted in our corpus yesterday with nothing to arbitrate them, and why we cannot say whether Fars's $125 physical cargo claim represents a real decoupling from the paper price. We have no visibility into the American decision at the centre of the Iraqi file — the waiver both ecosystems were arguing about is being made in a venue we do not observe, and both versions of the flight schedule were therefore claims about a pending decision, not reports of it. And our largest collector remains oriented elsewhere: on the Russian channels we scrape, the Hormuz and Iraqi files again drew a small fraction of the volume spent on unrelated subjects, so our biggest source bloc contributed almost nothing independent to the two stories that dominated the window. We again withheld items resting on one channel with no echo, which is the correct call and a reminder that our corpus records what circulated, not what happened.
Check back tomorrow. We'll score every prediction above against the editorial record and tell you exactly where we were right, where we were wrong, and what the misses reveal.
