Attribution gets manufactured downstream of the primary source

Iranian state outlets reproduced UKMTO's hedge exactly — Fars [TG-590958], Mehr [TG-590996], ISNA [TG-591084], BBC Persian [TG-591013] all carried 'unknown projectile.' The OSINT aggregator Middle East Spectator published 'Iran has struck a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz' [TG-590959]. The agent that the primary source deliberately withheld was supplied by a sympathetic intermediary, not by the belligerent. Separately, IntelSlava posted an identical, sourceless sentence about IRGC Navy anti-ship launches three times across ten hours with no new detail [TG-590674, TG-590744, TG-591541] — repetition functioning as presence maintenance rather than reporting. Boris Rozhin annotated the incident rather than relayed it, writing that in the 'open and free Strait of Hormuz' another tanker was hit and that shipping there remains under Iranian control [TG-591139]. And Rybar MENA, unusually, turned on the opacity itself, noting UKMTO only belatedly disclosed a 25 August tanker strike whose name and ownership are still undisclosed [TG-591592]. A striking share of this window's Western reporting reached us through reflection. TASS, citing Bloomberg, on American plans to revive prize courts for seized Iranian tankers [TG-590666]. ISNA, citing Bloomberg, on allies disbelieving the Hormuz demining claims [TG-590661]. IRNA, citing NBC, on unprecedented damage to US intelligence facilities in the region [TG-591166]. Mehr, citing the Washington Post, on Asian allies alarmed by munitions expenditure [TG-591410]. SolovievLive summarising Defense One on the absence of any shortcut to replenishing Pentagon magazines [TG-591047], and separately relaying Hegseth's claim that the US controls the strait and Iran's only exit is the negotiating table [TG-591739]. Each of these is a US-sourced story about American strain, and each arrives pre-selected by an ecosystem with an interest in that strain.
The mediation picture is assembled the same way. Qatar confirmed its prime minister's Tehran trip [TG-590781]; the White House spokesperson told Al Mayadeen no talks are ongoing or scheduled [TG-590645] and the blockade remains fully applied [TG-590646]; Xinhua, reporting Trump's Al Jazeera interview, has him with no timetable and in no hurry [TG-591240]. Pakistan's foreign ministry then said its army chief visited Tehran on mediation and to renew efforts to reopen Hormuz [TG-591425], adding that Islamabad is not bound by unilateral sanctions [TG-591552]. The mediator count is rising while every principal denies talking. That is not mediation failing; that is what deniability costs.
One item sits outside all of these frames and is carried by exactly one channel in our corpus: Almasirah reports Iran's armed forces warning that hostile media outlets could be treated as military targets [TG-591449]. Whether that silence is disavowal or discipline, a threat directed at the information environment itself, surfacing in one Houthi-aligned English feed and nowhere else, is the kind of signal this observatory exists to record.
