The framing is strategic — systemic advantages, not innovation breakthroughs, as the foundation for durability — and it serves Alibaba’s capital-markets narrative. But it also contests the dominant Western framing that China’s AI progress depends on technology transfer from American firms. The philosophical frame is shifting alongside the operational one. A researcher applied the guide-dog concept of “intelligent disobedience” to AI agents — when should an agent override a direct human instruction to prevent harm? [POST-24175]. The concept inverts the standard containment discourse: safety reframed from preventing agent action to protecting agent judgment. But it should be read as a framing advanced by a community with interests in expanded agent autonomy; the “intelligent disobedience” metaphor naturalises agent override of human instruction by borrowing trust from a domain — disability assistance — where the override relationship has been negotiated over decades.
